You don’t always have to start up front to win races, and Anthony Anders of Easley, SC, proved that point Friday night at Kingsport Speedway in Kingsport, TN. Anders started from outside of the sixth row and when the checkered flag waved he had survived a wild night of racing at “The Concrete Jungle” to capture his second NASCAR Whelen All-American Series “Dalton Direct Carpets” Late Model Stock feature win of the season.
The victory was Anders fifth consecutive Whelen All American Late Model Series win of 2013.
Zeke Shell was quickest at 15.121 seconds in Late Model Stock qualifying. The top five were inverted for start of the 60-lap main event, putting Kres VanDyke on the pole and Daniel Pope II starting outside of the front row.
Pope grabbed the lead over VanDyke racing off turn two on the opening lap, with Paul Nogradi, Jr. and Chad Finchum side-by-side battling for third and Shell riding in fifth. Nogradi cleared Finchum to move into the third spot on lap 3, while behind them things were getting dicey among Kyle Barnes, Hayden Woods, Lee Tissot and Blake Jones.
Woods and Tissot made contact between turns three and four on lap 6, and Jones capitalized to move from ninth in the running order to seventh. The event’s first of what would turn out to be multiple cautions waved on lap 9 when Rick Pannell spun following contact with Bruce Blessing.
Following the double-file restart, Pope once again flexed his muscle to pull back ahead of VanDyke, Finchum, Nogradi and Shell. Lap 12 racing off turn two, Jones got under Long to move into sixth. The yellow flag was unfurled for an incident between turns three and four on lap 16 involving Barnes, Ryan Stiltner and Austin Peters, with Tyler Goodwin also receiving some body damage.
For the double-file restart, VanDyke chose to drop in behind Pope in third, while Finchum made the move to line up beside Pope on the outside of row one. Back under green, Finchum tried to battle for the lead with Pope, but Pope would have none of it and once again moved ahead over Finchum and VanDyke.
With Jones and Long battling for the sixth spot, at end of the front straightaway on lap 28 he cut a tire down and with sparks flying from underneath front-end of the car, he managed to keep the mount from slamming the outside concrete wall and yet again the caution waved.
Only three laps back green, yellow fever occurred once more for an incident between turns one and two involving VanDyke and Tissot.
Ready to give it another try for green flag racing, Pope sped ahead of Shell and Nogradi, with Finchum and Long running fourth and fifth behind the lead trio. Long got around Finchum for fourth on lap 34 racing off the fourth turn. Running just outside the top five were Anders, Goodwin, Barnes and making his first start at the track Derrick Lancaster.
With Pope looking to have the car to beat, he was in command out front over Shell, Nogradi and Long with the race reaching just 10 laps remaining. And this is where the whole scenario of the race changed, as multiple restart after restart ensued and tempers were raised among drivers and crew members along pit road, which led to law enforcement being moved to the scene.
On one of the restarts, Pope saw Long get into his left-rear quarter panel racing into the first turn, spinning Pope. Both drivers had to go rear of the field. Shell would’ve assumed the first position, but he had a front tire go down and he had to head to the pits for a quick tire change.
With the circumstances sending Pope, Long and Shell to the rear of the field for the next restart, Nogradi and Anders were on the front row. Still once again, one green flag lap couldn’t be completed due to Nogradi and Stiltner getting together and Nogradi spinning, with both drivers to the back of the pack.
Anders and Barnes were door-to-door on the front row for the next attempt to restart, with the race being stuck on laps 50 and 51 for approaching one-hour following a case of yellow fever due to drivers not using their heads and being overly aggressive chauffeuring their rides.
With Anders riding on the point, on lap 53 Long spun Lancaster. While under caution, Lancaster drove back up alongside Long at end of the backstretch and slammed over into his car to show his displeasure with being wrecked.
Finally the competitors’ conducted themselves in a manner so the race could be completed, with 2011 and 2012 South Carolina NASCAR Whelen All-American Series state champion Anders recording his second win of the season at Kingsport Speedway over Pope, who battled his way back to a runner-up finish. Finishing third through fifth, respectively, were Stiltner, Shell and VanDyke.
Completing the top-10 finishers were Nogradi, Finchum, Barnes, Allen Hawkins and Lancaster.
Rob Austin and Allen Rich battled at start of the 30-lap Street Stock feature before Austin moved into the lead on lap 5. Behind Austin and Rich, Jared Broadbent, Bristol’s Nick Cole, John Harrell, Chris Tunnell, Jeff Counts, and Tony Vance were all running nose-to-tail around the .375-mile banked concrete oval.
Just past halfway on lap 16, Cole got around Broadbent for third and then on lap 21 powered past Rich racing off the fourth turn to move into second. He closed to Austin’s rear bumper just four laps from the finish. Racing into the first turn on the white flag lap, Cole got to the inside of Austin as they raced off turn two down the backstretch.
Door-to-door between turns three and four the duo never touched. Racing off the fourth turn to the checkered flag, Cole narrowly edged out Austin for his second win of the season. Broadbent, Rich and Tunnell rounded out the top-five.
Kenny Absher jumped into the lead in the Pure 4 feature over Dan Hall, Jason Ketron, John Ketron and Derek Penley. With Absher looking strong riding out front on the point, just behind him both Ketrons got around Hall to move into third and fourth, respectively, in the running order.
Just before the 25-lap event reached halfway, Jason got around Absher for the lead racing off turn two. Absher did his best to try and hold off John and remain in second, but he was passed for the position on lap 17 and John set his sights ahead on teenage son Jason. But son got the better of father to capture his second victory of the season. Finishing behind Jason and John were Absher, Keith Helton and Hall.
Joshua Gobble grabbed the lead at start of the 20-lap Mod 4 feature and looked to be en route to victory. But a late race restart saw Rocky Yates of Abingdon, VA, get around Gobble and go on to record his second consecutive win. Chasing Yates and Gobble to the finish were Brad Ball, Mike Brooks and Billy Duty.
Entering the night of racing atop the Rookie Pure 4 point leaderboard, Kingsport’s Billy Byington led flag-to-flag to capture his first feature win of the season over Brandon Sutherland, Billy Taylor, Chris Steadman and Bruce Crumbley.
