It was a brisk Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC, but the action was hot, as Austin McDaniel tangled with Jesse LeFevers with three to go, sending LeFevers into a slide and sending McDaniel to victory lane in the Late Model season opening feature.
Matt Piercy would set the fast time at 15.09 and led the 22 car field to the green for the 100-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Model event. LeFevers would take the early lead followed by Piercy, Keith Bumgarner and Josh Wright. Early contact between Wright and David Roberts would bring out a caution with multiple cars involved.
As the race wore on, Bumgarner would fall off of the pace late with handling problems. Meawhile, McDaniel would move his way forward, setting up the fight for the lead with three laps to go. McDaniel and LeFevers would make contact with three to go. LeFevers would make the save, but McDaniel moved on to score the win. LeFevers finished senc, with Piercy, Ashley Huffman, and Tyler Church rounding out the top five.
In other action, Todd Harrington took the pole and led the K & P Construction 4-Cylinders to the first green flag of the season. Harrington pulled out to an early lead followed by Donnie Harmon, Tim Canipe and a battle for fourth between Randy Canipe and Nathaniel Kanupp. Caution fell on lap 16 for a spin by Randy Canipe, who had been running fourth at the time.
On the restart, Harrington assumed the lead followed by Tim Canipe who moved into second. Harmon moved past Canipe on lap 22. Meanwhile up front, Harrington would score the victory. Harmon finished second, followed by Tim Canipe in third, Kanupp in fourth, and Randy Canipe in fifth.
Shane Lee captured the pole for the Parmount Kia Limited Late Models. It was door to door for several laps between Lee and the Landon Huffman followed closely by the Charlie Watson. There were multiple cars battling for fourth with Kaleb Pressley, Sheflon Clay and Casey Pierce fighting for position. Pressley began working Watson for third on lap 14, eventually taking the position followed by Clay, which would move Watson to fifth. A spin by Chris Phipps on lap 25 set up a 10 lap dash for the victory. On the restart Lee resumed the lead and scored the win followed by Huffman, Pressley, Clay and Watson.
David Werner would bring the Street Stocks to the green flag and take the early lead followed closely by Marshall Sutton and Jonathon Smith. Sutton would begin to pressure Werner early in the race but Werner would continue to lead. The first caution of the event came out on lap 14 when Smith began. Ib the restart it was Werner, Sutton, Kevin Eby, Jason Stanley and Mark Whitten fighting for position.
On Lap 15, Stanley would clip the inside wall after contact with another competitor and that would end his night. Lap 17 brought out the caution for a spin by Trey Buff.
When the green flag came out, Werner and Sutton went door to door with Eby, Roy Smith, and Larry Mosher in tow. Sutton and Werner would touch on the backstretch, which allowed Sutton to take the point. Sutton would take the win followed by Eby, Mosher, Roy Smith and Whitten.
Charlie Neill led the field to the green flag in the WrenchRags Renegades race. Neill took the early lead, with Carroll McKinney, Kenneth Roberts and Greg Austin following closely. Neill went on the take the win followed by McKinney, Austin, Roberts and the Daniel Moore.
Hickory Motor Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, with 100 laps scheduled for the NWAAS Bojangles Late Models. Also on tap will be the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Super Trucks and WrenchRags Renegades. For more info, visit hickorymotorspeedway.com.
