Because of the luck of the draw Steve Poiriet from St. Mathieu de Bebeil, Quebec had to start 12th in the last heat race for the 48 cars on hand for the  l5th Annual “King of 360s” Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL Friday night, but he finished fifth and acquired enough passing points to start third in the feature and came home with his first win ever at East Bay, pocketing $l,500 in the process.

A regular on the ESS (Empire Super Sprints) tour where he is a three time Champion in just the seven years he has been running the 360 sprints after starting off in Modifieds where he was successful at Drumondville with six big block championships.   He described the reason he likes Sprints is the feel of the gas pedal and the response of the chassis.

He used his Eagle chassis powered by an A.M.B. engine to patiently wait for the right time to make his move on the leader Michael Parent.  With Michael Miller on the pole for the 25 lapper and Parent starting outside, Poiriet lined up third with Jason Sides outside.  Local racer Gene Lasker started fifth inside Jerod Roller.  Robbie Smith, Tony Agin. Tim Shaffer and Danny Smith made up the first ten.

But it was Parent who grabbed the lead with Poiriet in pursuit as they started lapping cars just six laps into the race.  The lone yellow flag came out on lap nine for Robbie Smith who spun on the front stretch.  At the half-way mark, the pair separated themselves but Danny Smith and Jason Sides were catching up.

Poirier made his winning move on the outside, passing Parent on lap 21 with Michael Miller taking third followed by Sides, Danny Holtgraver, Danny Smith, Tim Shaffer, Terry McCarl, Greg Wilson and Jerod Roller in the top ten.

“It took us 25 hours to tow down here to get a nice vacation in this Florida weather, but it sure made it nice to have this payday,” explained the happy winner.

The heats went to Roller, Parent, Miller and Lasker.  The two B-Mains sent Jayme Barnes, Glenn Styres, Kyle Sauder, Greg Wilson from the first, then Terry Gray, Shawn Dancer, Holtgraver and Scotty Thiel from the second  to the A-Main.

The top six in points locked in for the Ronald Laney Memorial are Tim Shaffer, Michael Miller, Danny Holtgraver,  Jerod Roller, Greg Wilson and Terry McCarl.

In other action, over 45 Mini Sprints were on hand for night #2 of the Florida Mini Sprints Winternationals in conjunction with the King of the 360 Sprints.

Heat number one went to Brock Zearfross in his Edge Chassis 600cc Yamaha from Jonestown, PA. Heat race two went to Osceola, Arkansas’s Travis Senter, Jr. in his PMP Chassis 750cc FTZ engine. Third heat race went to Tim Buckwalter from Douglasville, PA in his SB3 Chassis 750cc Suzuki engine. The final heat race went to Shane Lewis from Honeybrook, PA in his Hyper Chassis 750cc engine.

After the four heat races of the 360 Sprints were run, the B-Main for the Mini Sprints were next. Winning the B-Main was Steve Crabtree from Leesburg, FL in his PMP Chassis with a 750cc Suzuki engine.

In the feature, Zearfross started on the pole with Tim Buckwalter on the outside. When the green flag waved it was Buckwalter showing the way for the first four laps until the red was displayed as five cars tangled on the front stretch. Nicholas Snyder almost flipped over on his tail tank but the car never went over. Also involved was Carli Yent, John Moss and Eddie Moss, Jr. Everyone was okay.

Racing had barely resumed when another red came out as Coby Adams tumbled over in turn one and almost climbed the wall.  Gavin Thomas, Shane Lewis, John Kahl and Kendale Crout were also involved. All drivers were okay but were not able to continue.

After another attempt to restart the race, more cars tangled on the front stretch bringing out another caution. On the next restart, cars were lined up single file with Buckwalter leading over Tyler Devault, Brock Zearfross, Tyler Walten and Jim Young.

On lap nine, Devault did a slide job on Buckwalter to take the lead, but on lap 11, Zearfross charged to the front passing Devault and never looked back. Finishing second was Devault, with Jim Young, Tim Buckwalter and Tyler Walten rounding out the top five. Last night’s feature winner James Morris finished sixth with Mike Dicely, Dirk Miller, Travis Senter, Jr. and Kenny Vincent rounding out the top ten.
