Woody Pitkat had to fight for the win Wednesday night. He went toe-to-toe with Chuck Hossfeld as the two swapped the top spot before Pitkat finally moved away with the lead, and went on to score the victory in John Blewett Memorial 76 for the Tour-Type Modifieds in night five of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Starting from the pole, Pitkat moved out to the lead off the start, while Ron Silk looked to challenge for the lead over the opening laps. Silk would get his shot on the lead on lap 10, and would hold the position until just after lap 30, when lap traffic allowed Pitkat to close and retake the top spot.
In the meantime, Hossfeld worked his way up into the top three. With just over 30 laps to go, he moved to second during pit stops under caution, and set his sights on the lead. Rim riding on the outside, Hossfeld began closing the gap on leader Pitkat. Hossfeld would make the pass for the top spot on lap 53, put Pitkat would work to stay within striking distance.
Pitkat made the move to retake the lead with 10 laps to go. After running side-by-side, Pitkat finally moved away into the lead. He would hold the top spot for the rest of the way to score the win.
Hossfeld was flagged in second, but failed post-race tech. That moved Andy Seuss to second, with Patrick Emerling in third, Jimmy Zacharias in fourth, and Ronnie Silk in fifth.
In other action, Kyle Benjamin moved around David Rogers on lap 18 of the 35 lap Super Late Model feature, and would hold off a charge on a late restart by Stephen Nasse to score his second straight feature victory of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. Nasse finished second, with Spencer Davis in third, Davis in fourth, and Ryan Moore in fifth.
In the Pro Late Model feature, Jared Fryar would move out to the lead on the drop of the green flag, and would hold off challenges by Alex Labbe for the first half of the 35 lap event. On the final lap, Brandon Johnson tried to put a move on Fryar for the win, but could not make it stick as Fryar scored the win.
Fryar is the grandson of former NASCAR driver, Snowball Derby winner and Alabama Auto Racing Pioneers Hall of Fame inductee Freddy Fryar.
Johnson held on for second, with David in third, Labbe in fourth, and Joey Mucciacciaro in fifth.
In the FL-IMCA Modified feature, Jerry Symons held off John Sarppraicone, Jr. to score the win in the 75-lap feature. Tim Moore finished in third, with Josh Todd in fourth, and Jarrett Snowden in fifth.
