Kasey Kahne Racing’s Daryn Pittman powered past Sammy Swindell on lap 11 and charged to victory in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season opener Friday night during the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL.
Jac Haudenschild charged from fifth to finish second in the 30-lap main event with Brad Sweet, Sammy Swindell and Paul McMahan rounding out the top five. Defending series champion Donny Schatz of Tony Stewart Racing was eighth after starting 22nd.
“We were stout from the time we unloaded and we were just lucky enough to come out on top,” said Pittman, of Owasso, OK. “I’m as happy as I’ve ever been driving a race car.”
In DIRTcar UMP Modified action, Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, NC, won for the second consecutive year at Volusia after holding off a field that included Austin and Ty Dillon, Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Justin Allgaier and Brendan Gaughan.
The action continues Saturday night with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars and night one of the Gator Championship qualifying for DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.
