Saturday was a day for speed in Cordele, GA, as drivers from around the country vied for starting spots in Sunday’s SpeedFest 2013 at Watermelon Capital Speedway.
For the 200 lap Super Late Model feature, it was Wisconsin’s Johnny Sauter, a veteran of both NASCAR and the northern short tracks, that set fast time around the fast Georgia oval with a lap at 15.734.
But it will be Wheeling, WV driver Travis Bearden who starts on the front row after the redraw. Second generation driver John Hunter Nemechek will roll off second, with Georgia’s Scotty Ellis in third, Travis Sauter fourth and Huner Rbbins in fifth.
Kyle Benjamin, Johnny Sauter, Senoia, GA’s Bubba Pollard, Chase Elliott and Austin Therault round out the top ten starters. 32 cars are slated to take the green flag. 11 of those are piloted by drivers from Georgia.
In Pro Late Model qualifying, it was a pair of Georgian’s that paced qualifying, as Bubba Pollard turned in the fastest time with a 25.984. Defending event champion Chase Elliott, of Dawsonville, GA, turned in the second fastest time with a 16.110.
But on the redraw, it will be Florida’s Kyle Bryant that leads the field to green, with Ohio’s Cody Coughlin on the outside. Veteran driver Mike Garvey will start third, alongside Georgia’s Dalton Grindle. Hunter Robbins will roll of fifth.
Justin South, Elliott, Pollard, Alex Roberts and Harrison Burton rounds out the top ten starters. Just as with the Super Late Model event, 32 cars are scheduled to start. 16 of those hail from the Peach State.
The 100 lap Pro Late Model race for the JEG’s/CRA All Stars is slated to roll off at 2 pm, followed by the 200 lap Super Late Model race for the CRA/ARCA Super Late Models at 3:30 pm.
In addition, Sunday’s festivities will include an autograph session featuring several past, present and future racing heroes, including 1960 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Rex White, 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup champ Bill Elliott, current NASCAR drivers Joe Nemecheck, David Ragan, and Jeff Burton, along with future starts Chase Elliott, John Hunter Nemechek, and Harrison Burton.
