Fleeman Looks For First SpeedFest Win At ‘The Melon’

While much attention has been placed on the “young guns” that are set to take part in SpeedFest 2013 at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA January 26-27, it would be unwise to forget that, often times, old age and treachery can defeat youth and enthusiasm.

The field for both the Super Late Model and Pro Late Model features will have some of the wiliest veterans on the Late Model scene today.

One of those veterans who will lead the charge is Dacula, Georgia wheelman Russell Fleeman.  Fleeman, the 2008 World Crown 300 champion, is coming off a season in which he has seen a resurgence behind the wheel.  The two time GAS Series champion can boast a victory in 2007 and in 2006 at Watermelon Capital.  Sunday’s Super Late Model event will mark the first time the 2010 Lanier Super Six Series champ has run SpeedFest since 2010, when the event was held at Lanier National Speedway in Braselton, GA.  Fleeman did compete in the Pro Late Model portion of the event in 2012, finishing 22nd after being caught up in an accident.

Another veteran driver to watch is Mike Garvey.  The long time short track and NASCAR competitor is coming off a strong 2012, with four Pro Late Model wins and the track championship at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL.  Garvey also was victorious at South Alabama Speedway at Opp, AL, along with winning the first Super Late Model event held at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL since 2010.

Fleeman is slated to run in the 200 lap Super Late Model feature, while Garvey is expected to compete in both the SLM feature and the 100 lap Pro Late Model event that will precede it.

Other veterans to watch include Bubba Pollard of Senoia, GA, NASCAR competitor David Ragan of Perry, GA, and David Odell of Winder GA, 2012 Snowball Derby champion Erik Jones, Red Eye 100 winner Stephen Nasse, as well Anderson Bowen, Kyle Benjamin, Hunter Robbins, Spencer Davis, Allen Karnes, Rand Gentry, Brandon Oakley, Donnie Wilson and Travis Sauter.

SpeedFest 2013 consists of a 100 lap Pro Late Model race for the JEG’s/CRA All Stars, followed by a 200 lap Super Late Model race for the CRA/ARCA Super Late Models. Both events will be held on Sunday, Jan. 27, with practice and qualifying slated for Saturday, Jan. 26.

In addition, Sunday’s festivities will include an autograph session featuring several past, present and future racing heroes, including 1960 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Rex White, 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup champ Bill Elliott, current NASCAR drivers Joe Nemecheck, David Ragan, and Jeff Burton, along with future starts Chase Elliott, John Hunter Nemechek, and Harrison Burton.
