For the last couple of years, fans of dirt track racing at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA have had to go elsewhere to get their racing fix.
Starting in March, however, things will be different.
After sitting and languishing for the past few seasons, the 3/8’s mile semi banked clay oval will return to action, much to the appreciation of race fans across North Georgia.
A look at the schedule for the 2013 season for Lavonia shows the approach will be to not try to compete against nearby Toccoa Speedway or Hartwell Speedway. While those tracks see competition regularly on Saturday night’s, Lavonia’s schedule is made up mostly of Friday night action.
In fact, the lone exception appears to be the season opener, which is slated for March 9-10, a Saturday and a Sunday, featuring what’s billed as “Late Model Mania”, with $2,000 on the line to win for Limited Late Models, $3,000 for Crate Late Models and a $5,000 payday for the Super Late Models.
The track’s Friday season opener will be on April 5, with the first season points being awarded that night.
The World of Outlaws Late Models will be in action at Lavonia Speedway on May 3, with the FASTRAK Pro Late Models sharing the bill with an Independence Day fireworks celebration on July 5.
In between, the USCS Sprint Cars will be in action on June 14, along with Mini Sprints and a $1000 to win Pro Late Model feature.
The season is currently slated to wrap up on September 13-14 with the Georgia State Championship. In all, 24 events are slated for Lavonia Speedway in 2013.
