Augie Grill has seen many victories in his Late Model career.
Saturday night, he added another major win to his resume, as he streaked under the checkered flag to win the 47th annual Governor’s Cup 200 at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
With the victory, Grill became just the fifth driver to have won both the Governor’s Cup and the other Sunshine State classic, the famed Snowball Derby.
Johnny VanDoorn would lead early, but Grill put his famed No. 112 in the top spot on lap 15, and would stay there for most of the rest of the night.
VanDoorn would lose a lap in the pits due to a cut tire. He would scrap his way back to the front to give chase to Grill over the closing laps.
Preston Peltier and Matt Tifft would battle out throughout the night, and as the final laps came around, found themselves fighting for third spot. Austin Theriault would enter that battle as well over the final 20 laps.
In the end, it was Grill coming across the line in first, with VanDoorn second. Peltier was flagged in third, but failed post-race tech, moving Theriault to third, followed by Tifft in fourth and Kenzie Ruston in fifth.
Hunter Robbins, Rich Clouser, Stephen Nasse, Kevin Henry and Georgia’s Spencer Davis rounded out the top ten.
All results are unofficial until certified by race officials.
