Season Crowns Handed Out At Senoia Raceway

The 2012 Season Championship event was conducted on Saturday night at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA. Thomas Mewborn was crowned season champion in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets while Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran won his second straight season title in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. Rocky Johnson topped the points for the Mini Stock division and David Johnson was champion in the Bombers. Jason Williams missed the final night of the season, but had sewed up his title for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models.

Greenville’s Mewborn battled throughout the night with Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland and Newnan’s Ricky Payton. The title winner would snare a third place finish behind Kirkland and winner Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway from Hampton. Mewborn had built a strong points lead over Kirkland heading into the final night of the racing season.

Holloway battled early with Grantville’s Blake Griffin. The duo exchanged the lead position twice during the main event before Holloway made the final pass after nudging Griffin in turn one of lap ten. It was Holloway’s third win of the season.

“This is an affordable division of racing,” said Holloway afterwards in victory lane. “I think this is where I will be racing next year.”

Mewborn was crowned champion with Kirkland settling for a runner-up spot in the points. Kirkland returned to racing at Senoia Raceway after a 22-year hiatus from the sport. Newnan’s Johnny Stinchcomb ended up third in the overall point standings.

Brooks’ Jaycee Southwell used his sixth place feature finish to move into the number one spot for the rookie of the year rankings in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets. Southwell will now be honored along with other top performers this season at the Senoia Raceway Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 6.

The race for the season title was already over in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models as Locust Grove’s Jason Williams had clinched the laurels last weekend. But the race for the runner-up spot was heated as three competitors came into the final night of the season separated by only six points.

Stockbridge’s Trey White, Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris and Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher would do battle for the second place point standing and Morris would flax his muscle early as he topped the field during pre-race qualifying. Morris had borrowed an engine earlier in the week and posted a qualifying best 14.752 to claim the pole position. He would have an oil pressure problem though and decided to give up the number one spot and start at the back of the pack.

Alabama’s ‘Top Dog’ Dana Eiland was the benefactor as he moved up to the pole position and then used that to his advantage as he held the inside groove at the drop of the green flag. Shane Fulcher wrestled side by side with Eiland for the first two circuits of the 25-lap finale for the Late Models. Eiland finally was able to secure the spot on the third lap.

Glenn Morris never had the oil pressure problem he was worried about and climbed his way into the top five, but Trey White charged up through the field and overtook Morris on lap 16. White needed to finish within two positions of Fulcher to maintain his spot of second place in the points.

Fulcher challenged Eiland over the final five laps of the race, but was unable to get past. White could not garner another position either as Shane Fuclher’s father, Laddie, kept him at bay on several attempts to scoot past on the inside.

Eiland would win his first of the season at Senoia Raceway. Shane Fulcher would come home in second and secure his runner-up spot in the points. Laddie Fulcher would make a last lap pass on Newnan’s Craig ‘Zero Hero’ Scott and Trey White would come home fifth claiming the third place season ranking. Glenn Morris finshed right behind White in sixth and finishes the season fourth overall in the point standings.

The only season champion to win on the final night of the year was Carrollton’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. Moran was also the only driver to successfully defend his title from 2011. The feisty veteran held off challenges for the second straight week by the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton. It was Moran’s 20^th feature win of the season topping his then record of eighteen wins last year. Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson came home third in the race and also claimed third in the overall point standings. Brooks’ Kerry Carden was fourth and finished fourth in the standings while Newnan’s Brandon Jones had his best finish of the season rounding out the first five in the main even.

In the Mini Stock division, Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson claimed the season laurels on the strength of his top ten finish in the final feature race of the year. Johnson is the only champion in the three years under Tim and Tony Moses leadership to win a season points title without winning a feature race.

“His consistency and dedication to racing every weekend is what made the difference,” said Tim Moses. “There were weeks he did not know if he could make it to the track, but he would somehow figure out a way to race just to stay in the chase for the points title.”

Newnan’s Brandon Bright could have challenged for that title this season, but a family vacation cost him a night of racing and he thus shut down his shot at the crown. But, he did not disappoint Saturday night as the young star in the Mini Stocks topped his dad, Dorough Bright, to win his ninth feature of the season. Defending Mini Stock champion, Gary Parker of Barnesville, ended up third across the line and runner-up in the points. Parker passed LaGrange’s Stephen Hill on the final lap after the two had swapped the spot several times during the 15-lap race. Thirteen-year-old Bailey Temples rounded out the first five finishers in the Mini Stock feature.

Newnan’s 13-year-old Trey Wood would notch another top ten finish and claim the rookie of the year honors for the Mini Stock division. Wood and Temples were the two youngest drivers to compete at the 3/8ths mile clay track this season.

“Those boys are the future of the Mini Stock division,” said Tim Moses. “They are holding their own against some of the veterans and will be fun to watch over the next few years.”

Newnan’s Jay Conner nabbed his eighth win of the season in Bomber feature. Steve Davis, also of Newnan, ended up second ahead of Hoganville’s Tim Collier, Griffin’s David Johnson and 89-year-old Pappy Powell from Hoganville. Johnson claimed the season title.

The 2012 Senoia Raceway Champion’s Award Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 6 at 1:30pm. The ceremony will take place in the speedway grandstand and is free to the public. The top drivers in each of the weekly divisional standings will be honored along with each division’s rookie of the year winner, most improved driver, sportsman of the year, car owner of the year and the top drivers in the Jewel Series rankings. Awards, trophies and point fund bonuses will be presented to the drivers.
