Laddie Fulcher Captures Jewel Series Crown At Senoia

Laddie Fulcher held off several strong challenges throughout the first 20-lap main of Saturday night’s twin features racing card for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.

Fulcher’s first win of the season also helped him secure the track’s newly created Jewel Series crown for the year.  The Jewel Series is a series within a series featuring three separate nights of the season combining points in a double feature format.

Trey White was the other winner of the twin bill for the late models while Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway and Kelly Leonard split the main events for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.  Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran clean swept the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock doubles as did Dorough Bright for the Mini Stocks and Steve Davis in the Bombers.

The double feature finale for the Jewel Series is the first of two straight weekends in which the 3/8ths mile clay oval will decide series champions.  The season points titles will be decided this Saturday, September 22, as the track hosts their final show of the season.

Thomaston’s Laddie Fulcher grabbed the early race lead from his outside pole starting position, but had his hands full throughout the first twenty lapper for the high powered late model class.  Phenix City, Alabama’s Russ Ogletree made several attempts to get past the patriarch of the Thomaston racing family.  Ogletree would get alongside Fulcher’s left side door panel on four different occasions, but each time Fulcher would slam the door shut using his outside groove momentum.

In the second feature for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Stockbridge’s Trey White notched his first win of the season.  White held off Laddie Fulcher’s son Shane to capture the checkered flag.  Laddie Fulcher ended up third after a tough battle with LaGrange’s Jamie Carr.

The feature victory coupled with the third place finish was enough to squeak past Locust Grove’s “Racin Jason” Williams in the final tally for the 2012 Jewel Series title.  Fulcher edged Williams by two points in the three night series standings.

It was a split decision for the Newnan Bonding B Cadet class on Saturday night.  Hampton’s Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway snared the victory in the first round of features while Alabama’s Kelly Leonard worked past Newnan’s Ricky Payton to win the second race.

Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter was not hurt in a scary accident during the first Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature.  Carter spun to avoid another spinning car when he was slammed into by Watkinsville’s Buck Williams.  The hard impact lifted Carter’s ride up on to the right side resting up against Alvaton’s Hunter Worley.

The final points for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets Jewel Series standings ended up being handed to Thomas Mewborn.  The Greenville driver was trailing Newnan’s Marcus Caswell in the Jewel Series point heading into the final double feature night of the series, but Caswell opted to run his car in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model division on this night.  Mewborn used a fourth and sixth place finish to sew up the Jewel Series title.  Mewborn is also in position to win his first season title this weekend as he leads the overall season points race heading into this Saturday night’s final race of the year.

Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran celebrated his birthday early as the Carrollton driver clean swept the double features for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock division.  Moran won his 18th and 19th features of the season, topping his track record of 18 wins in a season.  Moran set the lofty mark en route to his season championship in 2011.

Moran had to work a bit harder for his second win of the night.  He battled side by side for the final six laps of the race with the sixteen-year-old up start Austin Horton.  The ‘Grantville Grenade’ (Horton) worked the high side of the race track while Moran charged through the lowside of the tight turns.  Horton slipped up enough in the final turn to allow Moran to beat him by a half car length at the finish line.

“He pushed just a little in that last corner,” said Moran.  “That was enough for me to get past him at the end.”

Moran won Saturday night’s battle, but Horton won the war as the high school student captured the very first Jewel Series title for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock division.

Newnan’s Dorough Bright held off Newnan’s Tim Pettigrew and then Barnsville’s Gary Parker to win both features for the Mini Stocks.  The clean sweep gave the elder Bright racing team member four feature wins on the season.

Parker topped all competitors in the final ranking for the Mini Stock Jewel Series winning the crown for the inaugural special series.

Newnan’s Steve Davis picked up his first career Senoia Raceway feature win when he won the first feature for the Bombers.  He followed that first win with a second win as he clean swept the eight cylinder stock car racing division.

Griffin’s David Johnson finished second in both races and won the Jewel Series title for the Bombers.

Senoia Raceway will celebrate the 2012 season with its Season Championship event this Saturday, September 22.  The season point’s titles will be decided in all five weekly divisions along with the final positions for all drivers.  The top ten drivers in each division will be honored at the annual awards ceremony next month.

“There are some close races for top ten positions in all of our classes,” said third year promoter Tim Moses.  “The late models have three drivers separated by only six points for the second, third and fourth place standings.”

Trey White (1,692 points), Glenn Morris (1,689 points) and Shane Fulcher (1,686 points) come into the final race of the season with a chance to move up the chart and finish in second place behind “Racin Jason” Williams.
