Racers from all around came to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA Saturday to compete for the win in their class and also for the NHRA King of the Track “Wally” trophy.
Before he won the Wally trophy, Super Pro winner Jesse Young (’00 Undercover dragster – Danielsville, GA) had to get past Brian Smith, who has been on a hot streak lately with his Flowery Branch, GA based ’07 Undercover dragster. Smith had the better reaction time in the final round pairing, and his car ran a great 0.01 over 5.104 at 133.03 mph (5.09 dial). However, Young made up for the 0.004 second deficit in the reaction time department with a dead-on 4.801 at 141.09 mph (4.80 dial), beating Smith to the win stripe by 0.009 seconds. The recent National Dragster Challenge winner Jeremy Hancock (’05 Undercover dragster – Commerce, GA) and runner up Hank Wilhelm (’96 Ed Quay dragster – Commerce, GA) made it to the semi-final round this time.
“I want to thank all of my crew, including wife Corie, son Lukas, dad David, Ronnie, Ashley, Chad, father in law Chris, and that deadly Wilkerson engine,” said Young.
Pro winner Matt Ward from Fair Play, SC was happy his father Jim came along to help with his ’69 Camaro, especially receiving the final round win against Chad Brewer (his third final against Brewer in 2012). Ward actually had a -0.002 second red light reaction time in the final, but Brewer had already handed the win over by leaving the starting line with a -0.012 second red light in his Canton, GA based ’68 Camaro. Ward went on to a 6.47 at 106.50 mph (6.42 dial), and Brewer carded a 6.90 at 99.24 mph (6.87 dial). Woody Bryant (’82 Camaro – Bowman, GA) and David Simmons (S10 pickup – Suwanee, GA) ended their day in the semi-final round.
“I want to thank God, wife Crystal, daughter Ava and father in law Wayne Allen. This win is special because my dad Jim was here today,” said Ward.
“The break from the rain really helped give me the time to think about winning,” said Sportsman winner Nick Wagner. “When it cleared, it cleared my focus, and I did my best.” He did his best, taking out points leader Howard Warren in the final with a telepathic 0.004 second react, and an off the throttle 8.32 at 83.44 mph (8.29 dial). Warren (’72 Maverick – Douglasville, GA) crossed the finish line 0.028 seconds later, with a breakout 7.599 at 87.00 mph (7.62 dial). Allen Long, who recently won the National Dragster Challenge in his class (’96 Silverado – Ballground, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.
Tim Sutton has the 2012 Motorcycle championship already sewed up, and ended the day on several high points. Earlier in competition he posted a rare perfect run (0.000 react – 5.660 on a 5.66 dial), and then won the final round against good friend and competitor Jay Rhyne. Sutton’s Clermont, GA based ’89 Suzuki was nearly flawless in the final, carding a 5.657 at 120.63 mph (5.65 dial), while Rhyne’s Athens, GA based ’82 Suzuki, which enjoyed a 0.001 second react, slowed a bit to 5.94 at 114.66 mph (5.89 dial). Paul Lee (’00 Suzuki – Mt. Airy, GA) and Don Chavous (’94 Suzuki) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse.
6.50 Index winner Bobby McNair (’82 Mustang – West Union, SC) was as happy about his Race Track Ministries trophy as he was about the winner’s check.
“My kids always ask if I won a trophy after I win, and now I get to bring one home,” said McNair. “I want to thank Racers For Christ for supplying the trophy.”
McNair met Walt Mesik (’77 Vega – Madison, GA) in the final, and although Mesik took the big end stripe first by 0.028 seconds, his time was a breakout 6.493 at 106.53 mph (6.50 Index). McNair’s winning time was 6.52 at 107.56 mph on the 6.50 Index. Travis Bryant (’68 Camaro – Bowman, GA) and Doug Stringer (’71 Nova – Conyers, GA) made it as far as the semi-final round.
After finishing runner up in the previous 7.00 Index event, Wade Bryant from Bowman, GA came out on top today, defeating Tanner Dutton’s Gainesville, GA based ’67 Camaro. Bryant’s ’67 Camaro carried him to victory courtesy of a 0.015 react and a 7.05 at 95.21 mph. Dutton’s machine followed soon after with a 7.08 at 98.50 mph on the 7.00 Index. Jody Blalock (’49 Hudson – Commerce, GA) and Doug Stringer (’71 Nova – Conyers, GA) were the semi-final pair.
“Sometimes I wonder why it seems so hard to win, and then when you do, it was so easy. I guess today was my day,” said Bryant. Bryant had quit racing for 25 years, and began again several years ago when his son Travis started racing.
Bill Boomhower from Walhalla, SC enjoyed a nearly perfect day in Open Comp Full Body with his ’65 Belvedere, taking the final round win and also scoring a perfect run in the quarterfinal round. Boomhower faced the ever tough Jeremy Hancock in the final round, and took the double breakout victory with a 6.205 at 106.59 mph (6.21 dial) after Hancock’s Commerce, GA based ’77 Vega broke out more with a 6.109 at 112.62 mph (6.14 target). Jeff Wagner (’71 Duster – Braselton, GA) was the sole semi-final finisher.
Eleven year old Jessie Daniel from Loganville, GA enjoyed her first Atlanta Dragway victory in 8-12 Jr Dragster. Daniel met twelve year old Commerce, GA racer Katie Wilhelm in the final, and took advantage of a better react to slow to the winning 9.00 at 70.76 mph on her 8.90 target. Wilhelm crossed the stripe 0.023 seconds later with an 8.91 at 71.87 mph (8.90 dial). Defending champion Austin Carden (13 – McDonough, GA) took home a semi-finalist trophy for his efforts.
Eight time champ Wesley Mayfield (16 – Gainesville, GA) returned to the 13-17 Jr Dragster winner’s circle again, after meeting Austin Solesbee (14 – Sautee, GA) in the final. Both racers turned in identical times, a breakout 7.899 on their 7.90 dial in times. Mayfield got the nod due to a slightly better reaction time (0.017 to 0.038 for Solesbee). Chris Bowden (16 – Homer, GA) earned the semi-finalist trophy.
