When you’re hot, you’re hot.

Lawrenceville, Georgia’s Danny Towe,  hot off a 7.50 Index runner up finish on June 4, continued his roll Saturday in two classes winning in the  7.50 Index class while just missing a finals berth in Open Comp Full Body.

Towe was feeling under the weather with a chest cold, and also had to miss his wife Suzanne’s birthday party  to attend today’s event – although he did have her permission to race.

His competitors in the 7.50 Index class couldn’t tell the difference, as he had great reaction times coupled with his ’70 Mustang running either dead-on to the index or very close all day.  Towe met engine builder Ed Nalley in the final, and claimed the winner-takes-all victory by coupling a telepathic 0.002 reaction time with a great 0.01 over 7.511 at 87.89 mph.

Nalley’s pass in his Maysville, Georgia based ’71 Camaro (0.010 react and 7.521 at 90.92 mph) would probably have won almost any other pairing of the day, but was only good enough for second place against Towe.  The lone semi-finalist was Woody Bryant (’92 Camaro – Bowman, GA).

“When it’s your day, it’s your day,” Towe said after the event.  ” I’m just thankful the good Lord lets us do this.”

Stan Sinack, the defending 6.50 Index champion, overcame traction problems suffered with his Lilburn, Georgia based ’69 Dart during the previous event and protected his points lead by defeating June 4 event winner Michael Goodwin in the 6.50 Index final.

Goodwin’s Jefferson, Georgia based ’70 Dart made Sinack work for the win, closing the gap at the top end stripe to 0.027 seconds.  However, Sinack’s better reaction time allowed him to take the win light with a slightly slower 6.531 at 100.06 mph.  Goodwin’s time was 6.526 at 102.58 mph.

The semi-finalists were Shawn McDonald (’58 Thames – Bethlehem, GA) and Chris Vanairsdale (’67 Chevelle – Buford, GA).  Sinack thanked friends Ed Nalley and Bill Boomhower for their between rounds help.

Defending Open Comp Full Body champion John Norris from Royston, Georgia has enjoyed a great 2011 season with several wins, including one at the recent Lucas Oil Series event in 12.0 Index.  He continued the streak with a victory against 2010 Super Pro champion John Hobbs in the Open Comp Full Body final.

A better reaction time allowed Norris to slow his ’86 Camaro to 7.51 at 86.66 mph against Hobb’s Conyers, GA based ’71 Vega wagon, which posted a 6.73 at 101.05 mph (6.69 dial).  Danny Towe (’70 Mustang – Lawrenceville, GA) finished a great day of racing in the Open Comp semi-final round, accompanied by another former track champion, Chad Brewer (’73 Nova – Canton, GA).

Norris thanked Wade Bryant Automotive, Tri-County Chevrolet, Mayberry Tire and Wheel and Atlanta Dragway for a great track to race on, noting that his 60 foot and 330 foot times were nearly identical all day.

The scheduled Summit ET Series event was underway, and only needed two more pairs of cars going down the track to complete round one.  At this point Mother Nature stepped in, with high winds and a lot of rain, forcing the cancellation of the day’s Summit ET event.
