Just call Micky Cain “The Bounty Hunter.”
It has been seven years since Cain had raced in competition as a driver, but it certainly didn’t show Saturday night as the former World Crown 300 champion drove Lee Langford’s Outlaw Late Model to the victory in the Georgia For Fair Tax Outlaw Late Model Series at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA.
Cain and Langford had teamed up to go after the bounty on David Hodges, who had won the four previous OLM features at the Cordele track. Some of his competitors joked about Cain’s return behind the wheel, with his last previous start having come in 2005 in the Snowflake at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL.
Cain’s response to his competitors?
“They were just revvin’ the old man I guess,” said Cain, who serves as Competition Director at Gresham Motorsports Park. “You know I turned 47 two weeks ago. Two weeks ago today, in fact. But the old man can still get it done pretty good I guess. But trash talkin’ is all part of it. I don’t get involved in it that much.
“Sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you. We do our talkin’ on the race track.”
Cain shook any rust off early, putting the Langford Trucking Ford Fusion on the outside pole. When the green flag dropped, Cain dropped back behind leader Matthew Wragg, waiting for the right moment to strike.
That moment came soon after the ten lap mark, as he found daylight on the low side of Wragg. Wragg worked hard to pressure Cain, trying to hold the veteran driver on the low side to break his momentum. The two touched, leaving marks down the right side of Cain’s No. 28.
But Cain completed the pass, and moved away to score the win in the 50 lap feature, collecting the trophy, the winner’s check, and the bounty on Hodges. It was Cain’s first win since 2004 at Watermelon Capital Speedway.
Cain and Langford thanked their entire crew, along with Richard Senter and his crew, for all their help in making the win possible.
