Two new faces visited Senoia Raceway’s victory lane on Saturday night in Senoia, GA. Austin Horton, the Grantville Grenade’ topped the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks and Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway bested the field in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.
Tod Darda won for the sixth time this season in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model division while Brandon Bright won his eighth feature and Michael Mills won his second of the year.
Sixteen-year-old Austin Horton fought off numerous challenges from Carrollton’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran throughout the 20-lap main event for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. Moran had won seventeen features this season after winning a record eighteen in 2011. Horton would knock Moran out of the winner’s circle for only the fourth time this year on Saturday night.
Moran caught Horton after fighting through a stellar field of competitors including Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson who had his best showing of the season. Atlanta’s Wilson Boozer, Johnson and Moran battled for the second place position until the ninth lap when Moran shot past down the back stretch. He would catch Horton two laps later, but tapped his rear quarter panel while trying to get low in turn four of lap 11. The result was Moran spinning and bringing out the caution.
Moran would be relegated to the back of the pack, but would charge back to the front quickly. He had climbed back as far as fourth place when third place driver Kerry Carden of Brooks would get a slight bump and flew up the track and into the outside turn two wall. Again, Moran was sent to the back of the pack as being part of the cause for the caution.
As tensions built, Moran would move inside and outside to make his way back to the top five. He again had climbed back into the top four and was racing Boozer side by side down the front stretch when the two connected sending Moran airborne and Boozer sliding up the track into the turn one concrete. Moran would head to the pit area for repairs, but would make it back out for one more chance to catch Horton who was in control at the front of the field. For the third time Moran would start at the rear of the field after going to the pits.
Horton cruised the final three laps to claim his first win of the season. Rusty Johnson ended up with his best finish of the season in second place. Kerry Carden was third followed by Griffin’s Chad Foster and Jackson’s Bill Brown. Moran returned with a badly beat up race car and was able to get back to sixth place before the final flag fell.
“It feels great to finally beat him on the track,” said an elated Horton afterwards.
“Good job Austin,” said Moran in an online blog after the race. “I would have liked to been up there with you but it is hard to race the cars and the race officials too.”
Moran did not agree with some of the official’s decisions on being involved with race cautions.
The yellows were flying in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature as well. Early race cautions ended the night for defending points champion Jeff Carter of Stockbridge, Newnan’s Ricky Payton and newcomer Jimmy Baxter. Watkinsville’s Buck Williams would be victim of another crash four laps into the event when he climbed up on top of Greenville’s Thomas Mewborn.
When the dust settled, Hampton’s Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway was the winner followed by Grantville’s Blake Griffin, Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland and Mewborn. Newnan’s sixteen-year-old young gun Corey Payton rounded out the first five. Payton is the son of Ricky Payton who was involved in one of the early race cautions.
LaGrange’s Tod Darda led flag to flag to win his sixth feature of the season in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models. Phenix City, Alabama’s Russ Ogletree started to close the gap as the final laps clicked off, but was unable to pass an slowing Darda as the checkered flag flew over the field. Hamilton’s Thomas Lewis was third followed by Newnan’s Craig Scott and Locust Grove’s Racin Jason Williams.
“I think I blew it up on that last lap,” said Darda in victory lane. “Pretty sure the engine is gone.”
Brandon Bright battled side by side with his father Dorough Bright in the Mini Stock main event. The father/son duel ended when Brandon used the lapped car driven by Sharpsburg’s Joshua Blume to pick off the elder Bright. Brandon would cruise to his eighth win of the season followed by Dorough in second and Newnan’s Tim Pettigrew third.
“The flagman should get those lapped cars to move over,” said Brandon Bright. “If he would have been in front of me like that, I would have pushed him harder into the wall.”
The night’s finale was won by Moreland’s Michael Mills. He dominated the Bomber feature winning by over a half lap. Newnan’s Woodie Wood and Steve Davis ran second and third.
Senoia Raceway will take the Labor Day weekend off to allow drivers, crew members and fans to head to Hampton and the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the NASCAR race weekend. The 3/8ths mile dirt track will fire back up on Saturday, September 8th with the final leg of the Jewel Series. The special series within a series will be highlighted by double features for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets and Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers. Double features, double points, double fun, but the same low ticket prices for fans and drivers.
