Last Lap Pass Gives Moran Hobby Victory At Senoia

Not to be overlooked during Saturday’s Senoia Summer Nationals at Senoia Raceway in Senoia GA, were the local divisions, who were on hand to do battle for the fans.

“Racin’ Jason” Williams scored the win in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, along with  Thomas Mewborn in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.  Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran won a thriller in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks while Stephen Hill topped the Mini Stocks and Jay Conner the Bombers.

The Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature was looking like a blow-out victory for the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton as the 16-year-old rookie built a near straightaway length lead over current divisional point’s leader Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran of Carrollton.  That seemingly insurmountable lead was reduced to nothing as Horton attempted to pass a sixth place running Chad Foster.

With two laps remaining, Foster was given the move over flag and told via receiver to allow the leaders to pass.  But, Griffin’s Foster held his ground racing Horton to try and keep his lead lap position.  This scuffle allowed Moran to close the gap as the white flag flew over the three drivers.

On the final lap, Horton went to the high side of Foster in turn one.  Foster slid up the banking allowing Moran room along the interior concrete.  With the packed grandstand on their feet, Moran shot past on the inside leaving Horton behind and claiming his second win of the weekend.  A disappointed Horton finished second with Atlanta’s Wilson Boozer third.

Horton protested Moran after the race forcing inspectors to tear down Moran’s engine.  Post race inspection of Moran’s engine were good as the seventeen time winner this season was found to have a legal engine from top to bottom.

In the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Alabama’s Kelly Leonard was not so lucky.  Leonard led the 20-lap main event from flag to flag, but was also protested at the inspection area by second place finisher Thomas Mewborn.  Leonard’s crate engine was found to have a camshaft and springs that did not match the numbers provided to Senoia Raceway inspectors by General Motors, the manufacturer of the crate engines allowed in the class.  Leonard was stripped of the win and Mewborn was declared the winner.

LaGrange’s Stephen Hill returned Saturday night to pick up the Mini Stock feature win.  Hill held off a challenge by Douglasville’s Randy Brady to pick up his fourth win of the year.  Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson was third ahead of Newnan’s Joe Spencer and Griffin’s Bubba Hicks.

Newnan’s Jay Conner passed Alabama’s Thomas Scroggins with six laps remaining and then cruised to the win over ‘Lil Jon’ Jonathan Hemmings, also of Newnan, to claim the victory in the Bomber division.

It was Locust Grove’s Racin Jason Williams in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model feature.  Williams was never seriously challenged as he picked up the $1000 pay day with a wire to wire win over Stockbridge’s Trey White and LaGrange’s Tod Darda.

Senoia Raceway cranks back up this Saturday night with the ‘End of Summer’ Sparktacular.  Fans and drivers can look forward to a full night racing with the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets and Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers.  After racing is completed, a huge fireworks display will fill the night sky.
