Current Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model points leader “Racin Jason” Williams of Locust Grove returned to victory lane Saturday night at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.
Williams held off several charges from LaGrange hot shoe Tod Darda to secure his fifth win of the season. The victory also helped him move further in front of Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris in the season points as area stock car drivers move into the final month of the 2012 racing season.
Newnan’s Marcus Caswell picked up his fourth win of the year in the Newnan Bonding B Cadet class while Carrollton’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran returned to his winning ways in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks. Gary Parker was awarded the victory in the Mini Stocks after surviving a post race tear down and Jay Conner won the feature for the Bomber division.
Williams nailed down his fifth fast qualifier award of the 2012 campaign by traveling the 3/8ths mile oval in 14.780 seconds for an average speed of 91.3 miles per hour. The fast time also locked him into the pole position for the 25-lap main event.
At the drop of the green, Williams shot down the front stretch and cleared outside pole sitter Tod Darda as the field scrambled behind them for position. Newnan’s Craig Scott slid high in the first turn allowing Stockbridge’s Trey White to scoot by on the inside while Phenix City’s ‘Top Dog’ Dana Eiland had to hold back and settle into fifth.
On lap 6, Eiland lost control of his ride collecting Thomaston’s Laddie Fulcher, LaGrange’s Jamie Carr and Newnan’s ‘Wild Child’ Marty Lunsford. Glenn Morris made an excellent move to avoid being caught up in the melee.
Williams held off several challenges from Darda to capture the checkered flag. Craig Scott ended up in third after a strong charge. Glenn Morris was fourth followed by Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher. The race’s hard charger was 16-year-old Marty Lunsford who started 10th and finished in the sixth position.
“I want to thank Tod for driving a clean race,” said Williams afterwards. “The track was awesome and we are ready for next weekend’s double race.”
The Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models will compete both nights of this weekend’s Friday and Saturday night doubleheader as part of the USCS Senoia Summer Nationals III. The late models will compete both nights for an expanded purse paying $1000 to win each night.
In the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, it was all Marcus Caswell. The veteran racer led every lap leaving the racing to the boys behind him. Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter ran second while Hampton’s Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway and Watkinsville’s Buck Williams battled for third. Alvaton’s Hunter Worley ran fifth for the early part of the race.
Williams held off Holloway for the first ten laps as the duo fought for position on the tight confines of Senoia Raceway. Fans were locked in on the competition when Holloway was able to get a run on the 63-year-old Williams on lap 11 and take away third place.
Current Newnan Bonding B Cadet points leader Thomas Mewborn of Greenville ran into problems early after making contact with West Point’s Charlie Garrett. Mewborn bent a steering shaft and was relegated to just cruising to maintain his points position.
Caswell was the first man to cross the finish line while Carter ran second. Holloway was third, Williams fourth and Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland rounded out the first five.
The story was similar in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks as Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran shot out to the early race lead. That left the racing in the hands of Brook’s Kerry ‘Hop’ Carden and the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton. The fans enjoyed the classic race between Carden and Horton with Horton making the right move on lap 10 to move into the second place spot.
A caution on lap 11 for a blown engine in the car driven by Newnan’s Brandon Jones bunched the field back together and would give Horton an opportunity to restart the race right behind Moran. Sixteen-year-old young gun, Horton, worked the veteran Moran in each corner as the upstart rookie seemed to have little more low end torque. Moran’s car handled just a bit better through the turns which allowed him to keep Horton behind him over the final eight laps of the feature.
“These young guys are getting tougher and tougher,” said Moran. “Our car was better this week than it was last week.”
McDonough’s Rob Temples looked like he would be another new winner at Senoia Raceway. The rookie Mini Stock driver led every lap of the Mini Stock feature, but was protested after the race and refused to tear down for inspectors. The refusal results in a disqualification from the event.
Barnesville’s Gary Parker was awarded the victory after completing his post race tear down inspection. It is Parker’s first win of the 2012 season after winning one race last year en route to the season point title in the four cylinder stock car division. McDonough’s Josh Copeland moved up a spot to second and Newnan’s Joe Spencer was awarded third.
Newnan’s Jay Conner won his sixth feature of the season for the Bombers. Newnan’s Steve Davis had his best finish of the year in second ahead of the ‘Riverdale Rocket’ Mike Ray.
Senoia Raceway hosts a double-header weekend of racing this Friday and Saturday night as the United Sprint Car Series visits the 3/8ths mile speed plant for the USCS Senoia Summer Nationals III. Fans and drivers can look forward to a pair of full night racing cards with USCS Winged Outlaw Sprint Cars, USCS Mini Sprints, Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets and Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks competing on both Friday and Saturday night. The Mini Stocks and Bombers will also race, but only on Saturday night.
The Senoia Summer Nationals III will offer expanded purses for each division on both nights and also offer bonus money to the top drivers competing both Friday and Saturday. The Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models will compete for $1000 to win purses each night. The Newnan Bonding B Cadets and Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks will both run for $400 to win purses on Friday and Saturday night.
