Dusty Jones did for the second time this season what no other driver has done once at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA. The 2012 LaGrange high school graduate beat defending Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock champion Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran in the feature. The victory snapped a winning streak that extended back to May 19 when Moran missed a feature due to a family members wedding. The only other time Moran has been beaten on the track was when Jones bested the field on May 5.
Other Saturday night winners at Senoia Raceway’s tough 3/8 mile were Russ Ogletree in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Kelly Leonard in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Brandon Bright in the Mini Stocks and Woodie Wood in the Bombers.
Two of Senoia’s young guns bested the wily veteran Moran on Saturday night. Dusty Jones moved to the lead position by overtaking Brooks’ Mike Jenkins on the third lap. Sixteen year old ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton worked past Jenkins the next lap while Moran moved to third by lap five.
Jones worked his car hard through the turns as his Chevrolet wanted to push high. That issue allowed a hard charging Horton to close the gap by lap 15 when the two caught up to slower traffic. Jones darted to the outside of Brooks Kerry Carden while Horton looked inside. The top groove opened up enough for Jones to scoot past while Horton lost ground on the low side.
That was the break Jones needed as he crossed the finish line ahead of Horton by four car lengths. Both Jones and Horton showcased their abilities behind the wheel of a race car making a statement for the remainder of the season. They finished a straightaway ahead of third place Moran.
In the Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Alabama’s Kelly Leonard led flag to flag for his first career victory at Senoia Raceway. Leonard led a great race amongst all his challengers to capture an emotional victory for him and his family.
West Point’s Charlie Garrett ran second for the first eight laps before Grantville’s Blake Griffin slid by. It was not long before Hampton’s ‘Cowboy’ Paul Galloway was up on his horse overtaking Garrett for third place. Newnan’s Marcus Caswell continued the slide on lap 15 after a classic tussle with Watkinsville’s Buck Williams and Greenville’s Thomas Mewborn.
The side by side, door to door racing was all overshadowed by Leonard’s dominating performance as he crossed the finish line ahead of Griffin, Caswell, Holloway and Garrett. Paul Holloway lost power in turn two of the final lap allowing Caswell to move up one more spot as the checkered flag fell over the field.
“Our car is the Cancer Awareness car as my wife is a breast cancer survivor,” said an emotional Kelly Leonard in victory lane. “This past week my wife lost her mother. This is a special win for us. I thank this track and all the fans. This is the best place to race and we feel so welcome here. Thank you, everyone.”
The Alabama tide continued to roll during the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models feature as Phenix City, Alabama’s Russ Ogletree outdueled LaGrange’s Tod Darda for the top spot. Ogletree and Darda raced side by side for two laps before Darda slipped in turn four allowing Ogletree to secure the lead position. The two would race nose to tail the remaining laps with Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher running third.
When the checkers were displayed, Ogletree had notched his first career Limited Late Model victory ahead of Darda and Fulcher. Stockbridge’s Trey White was fourth ahead of Fayetteville’s hot shoe Glenn Morris.
Newnan’s Brandon Bright returned to victory lane in the Mini Stocks. Bright also extended his slim point’s lead over Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson in the season standings. Johnson finished fifth and now trails Bright by seventeen points. Last week’s Mini Stock feature winner Bo Chambers of Griffin was second ahead of Newnan’s Dorough Bright and Bobby Arnold.
The ‘Riverdale Rocket’ Mike Ray led the first five laps of the Bomber feature before he spun out in turn four. The field missed the spinning Ray including current Bomber points leader David Johnson of Griffin. Johnson inherited the lead, but lost it after a fun race with Newnan’s Woodie Wood. The veteran racer, Wood, who was making his return to racing on Saturday night shot past Johnson and then never looked back posting the win. Griffin’s Michael Archer rounded out the top three.
The third Annual Back to School Bash featured a crash-filled Demolition Derby as Fayetteville’s Big Bad Billy Clevenger topped Eddie Harris of Newnan. Clevenger and James Spink of Fayetteville teamed up on Harris after eliminating the rest of the field. Harris held off most of the barrage of hits, but could not outlast Clevenger in the end.
This Saturday, August 11, Senoia Raceway hosts it’s most popular activity offering FREE Kids Rides in the Race Cars. The racing action that will follow the rides will feature the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers.
