Tim Brown sailed ahead to claim the checkered in a rather smooth first Modified race at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, SC Saturday. But the second race for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series was a heated battle that sent shockwaves throughout the entire field.
Brown, of Rural Hall, was the fastest qualifier – and when the top six qualifiers redrew for starting position, lucky Brown plucked the pole as his starting spot. Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown, who was the second fastest qualifier, started on the outside front row.
As the green flag fell in the first 50-lap race, Brown shot out into the lead. For three double-file restarts, Clifton tried to steal the lead away. The number 66 of Clifton was able to deliver a nudge or two, but it seemed that no one could touch Brown.
“Everything’s just going well, and the car’s phenomenal,” said Brown.
On the third double-file restart, Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem was able to dart past Clifton to take over second place. Jonathan Brown pushed hard to catch up to Brown, waiting for a restart where he’d have the chance to take to the outside to challenge Tim Brown.
But unfortunately for Jonathan Brown, the caution flag didn’t come out for the rest of the race. He ended up finishing second. Brothers Michael Clifton and Ronnie Clifton finished third and fourth.
While Chris Fleming of Mount Airy and John Smith of Mount Airy battled for position in the first 50-lapper, Fleming nailed the rear bumper of Smith. Smith spun – and then caught Fleming up in the wreckage. Smith finished 16th.
But Lady Luck smiled on Smith when the “Madhouse Scramble” put him on the pole for the start of the second race. Smith secured the lead against Steven Truell of Midway and held on against the outside-row challenges of Joseph Brown of Winston-Salem and Austin Pack of Walkertown.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove passed by Pack to take over second and pressured Smith for the top spot. Myers gave Smith a stout tap to the rear bumper – but Smith retained the lead and Myers lost traction and position.
Danny Bohn of Huntersville then took over the second place spot, applying the heat to Smith. The #25 of Smith held strong for lap after lap until a collision with Bohn on a restart.
“When Danny kicked into it on the last restart, he cut into me and broke my right-front tie rod. When he broke my tie rod, that was all she wrote,” said Smith.
After the battle with Smith, Bohn also fought hard with Jonathan Brown for the lead – sending Brown spinning.
“Jonathan probably should’ve won,” said Bohn. “But we went down into turn one, there was some speedy dry, and we got together. We didn’t hit hard – the track was just so slick tonight.”
With just a few laps to go, Burt Myers and Jonathan Brown ran into each other as they fought for position. Jonathan’s brother, Joseph Brown, got involved – leading to a demolition derby as Myers and Joseph Brown took out their frustrations on each other.
Danny Bohn held on to grab the checkered flag, with Michael Clifton of Walkertown and Tommy Neal of Walkertown finishing in second and third.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Taylor Branch of Lewisville brought home the win in the first 20-lap race, with Rich Hunter of Winston-Salem finishing second and Derek Stoltz of Walkertown taking third. Michael Adams grabbed the checkered in the second race, with Kenny Bost of Lexington and Luke Fleming of Mount Airy coming in second and third.
K.J. Stimpson of Lewisville claimed victory in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series race. The race was cut short to only 15 laps due to time constraints. Tim Vaden of Kernersville finished in second, and Billy Gregg of Lexington placed third.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Derek Taylor of Yadkinville brought home the win for a second week in a row. The second Stadium Stock race was postponed due to time constraints.
