Thomas Mewborn had finished as a runner-up an unequaled seven times in 2012 at Senioa Raeway in Senoia, GA.
On Saturday night during the 2nd Annual Dog Days of Summer special 30-lap feature, Mewborn shook the monkey from his back as he led every single lap to claim his first win of the season. The Greenville driver also padded his season points lead for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets while pocketing the special bonus money for the extended lap main event.
“It feels good to finally get a win,” said Mewborn. “This win is dedicated to our engine builder who is recovering from a heart attack.”
Other winners at Saturday’s special event included LaGrange’s Tod Darda in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Carrollton’s Clifton Moran in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Griffin’s Bo Chambers in the Mini Stocks and Newnan’s Jay Conner in the Bombers.
Mewborn captured the special event’s pole position after winning the first of three qualifying heat races for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets. Alabama’s Kelly Leonard and Terry Braswell won the other heat races.
The pole sitter shot out to the early lead as Braswell faded on the outside. Kelly Leonard jumped into the second place spot ahead of Lannett, Alabama’s Roger Arnett. Braswell settled into fourth place just ahead of Newnan’s Marcus Caswell.
Caution was displayed on lap four when Marcus Caswell slowed and then was hit from behind causing him to spin in turn two. Caswell was collected by 16-year-old Newnan High Schooler Corey Payton who was then hit by his father Ricky Payton. Slamming into the pile of wrecked cars was Newnan’s Johnny Stinchcomb and Barnesville’s Alvin Nicholson. All drivers were uninjured, but both Payton’s and Stinchcomb’s cars would have extensive damage and would be out of the race.
As Mewborn pulled out to three, four and five car length leads over Leonard, Phenix City, Alabama’s Chris Arnett began a charge to the front. Arnett battled with Newnan’s Scott Howard and defending race champion Blake Griffin of Grantville. The two-time 2012 feature winner, Chris Arnett, worked past both before Leonard popped a right rear tire on lap 19 forcing him to the pit area.
The final race for the checkers saw Mewborn hold off a rally by Roger Arnett. The bridesmaid is a bridesmaid no longer as Mewborn led the field under the checkers with Roger Arnett second. Roger’s son Chris Arnett passed Howard for the final time on the last lap to claim a number three spot. Howard was fourth followed by Terry Braswell. Nineteen cars started the special 30-lap feature.
In the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Tod Darda went flag to flag holding back a hard charging Trey White of Stockbridge. White has been challenging for his first win of 2012 for the past month and half, but came up short again Saturday night. Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris was third while current points leader ‘Racin Jason’ Williams of Locust Grove was fourth. Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher rounded out the first five.
Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran continued his domination of the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock division. Moran passed a tough Randy Allen of Douglasville on lap 12 before cruising to his fourteenth victory of the season. Jackson’s Bill Brown was third ahead of Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson and Griffin’s Chad Foster.
Bo Chambers picked up his first feature victory since July of last year as the Griffin veteran bested Newnan’s Bobby Arnold, Barnesville’s Gary Parker, Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson and Griffin’s Bubba Hicks in the Mini Stock. Johnson closed the gap on point’s leader Brandon Bright of Newnan as Bright dropped early from the race.
Newnan’s Jay Conner claimed the Bomber feature after Griffin’s Michael Archer was disqualified in post race tech. It gives Conner five wins this season including three in a row.
This Saturday, Senoia Raceway hosts the ‘Back to School Bash’ featuring a full night of racing action in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers. Fans will also be entertained with an old-fashioned county fair style demolition derby.
