On a night that saw two rain delays and part of the front stretch wall knocked down at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA, third year promoters Tim and Tony Moses may have wanted to check and make sure that the calendar did read it was Saturday the 14th of July and not Friday the 13th.
Rain showers slowed the progress of the second leg of the newly created Jewel Series ‘Ruby’ Race, but a hot lap crash by 13-year-old rookie Brady Claybrook resulted in the front stretch wall cracking and collapsing near the entrance to the first turn. The work to insure driver safety created an additional 40 minute delay and forced the Moses to alter the Jewel Series double feature format for one night.
“Racin’ Jason” Williams picked up his third straight win in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models while Marcus Caswell won the main for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets. Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran won his 12th of the season in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock while Dorough Bright and Jay Conner visited the winner’s circle for the Mini Stock and Bomber divisions.
Locust Grove hot show, Jason Williams, was the fastest qualifier for the third straight week and wasted no time shooting to the front of the Late Model 25-lap main event. Alabama’s Russ Ogletree slid into the second place spot with Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher running third.
Ogletree was doing a good job holding down second when he bobbled on lap 12 allowing a hard charging Fulcher to move past. Ogletree was sporting a new limited engine and was piloting the car with the new power plant for the first time.
Williams would hold off a late race rally by Fulcher to win his third in a row at Senoia Raceway. Ogleetree ended up third ahead of Stockbridge’s Trey White and Laddie Fulcher from Thomaston. Laddie is Shane Fulcher’s father.
“The track was awesome tonight,” said Williams. “They have worked real hard to get this track back to this. Great job.”
Newnan’s Marcus Caswell worked lapped traffic to perfection as he held off all challenges by Newnan’s Scott Duffey. Caswell led flag to flag to claim his third Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature win of the season. Duffey ran hard, but settled for second ahead of Newnan’s Ricky Payton and Greenville’s Thomas Mewborn. Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland rounded out the first five finishers.
On the strength of his win, Marcus Caswell overtook the Jewel Series points lead from Mewborn. Caswell will head into the final leg of the three night series with a slim six point margin over Mewborn. Greenville’s Mewborn still leads the overall series points for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.
“There are some close battles in the Jewel Series standings,” said promoter Tim Moses. “The final night of this series within a series will take place in September. I think the drivers like this new twist to the schedule with the Jewel Series. I know the fans are enjoying it.”
The Jewel Series points leader in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks is rookie of the year candidate Dusty Jones of LaGrange. The recent high school graduate shot out to the lead position at the drop of the green and had a strong lead until a few cautions bunched the field together and allowed overall series points leader Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran to catch up to him.
Moran charged hard, even touching Jones near the halfway mark of the feature. Moran allowed Jones to get his rhythm back before giving it another try. Jones’ car began to push late in the race and this created just enough of an opening for the patient Moran to sneak past in the fourth turn.
Moran went on to record his 12th victory of the season while Jones had to settle for second. Brooks Kerry Carden was third ahead of Newnan’s Zack Sockwell and Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson.
The crowd was hushed early on in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock race when the ‘Grantville Grenade’ Austin Horton and Brooks Mike Jenkins locked horns in the second turn. Both drivers hit the outside retaining wall with Jenkins rolling over down the back stretch. Both drivers were not injured.
Newnan’s Dorough Bright took advantage of his son Brandon’s misfortune. Brandon Bright was leading the Mini Stock feature when his engine blew. That allowed his father Dorough to inherit the lead and then hold off defending Mini Stock champion Gary Parker for the victory.
Parker overtook the Jewel Series points lead while the disabled Brandon Bright is the new points leader for the season standings in the Mini Stock division. LaGrange’s Stephen Hill was absent Saturday night and gave up his position at the top of both series rankings.
Newnan’s Jay Conner dominated the Bomber feature winning his third of the season. Conner was in control most of the way after Phenix City, Alabama’s Thomas Scroggins’ Camaro lost it’s handling. Griffin’s David Johnson was third with the ‘Riverdale Rocket’ Mike Ray fourth and the previous week’s feature winner Doug Frazier fifth.
This Saturday, July 21, Senoia Raceway hosts the Kids Bike Races along with a full night of action packed stock car racing, including racing from the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers.
