Williams Notches Victory In Scorcher At Senoia Raceway

Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model points leader “Racin Jason” Williams had not won a feature race this season at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA.  That finally changed on Saturday night as the Locust Grove driver notched his first victory of the season and solidified his position at the top of the standings for the high powered racing division.

Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland won his second Newnan Bonding B Cadet feature while Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran picked up his tenth in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock class.  Newnan’s Dorough Bright and Griffin’s Doug Frazier won their first races of the 2012 season in the Mini Stock and Bombers.

Colbert’s Kenny Collins qualified the fastest in the early evening qualifying for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models.  Collins started the main event on the pole with Newnan’s Craig Scott on the outside.  The pole sitter has won over 100 career features and was looking to add to that number with a flag to flag run.

On lap 4, Collins slid high in turn four, almost slapping the outside concrete.  Scott shot down low and was able to pull along side Collins as they charged towards turn one.  The one hundred mile per hour drag race ended up forcing both drivers to the top of the track in turn one and two which allowed “Racin Jason” Williams to slide into the low groove and steal away the lead out of the second turn.

With Williams powering ahead down the back stretch, Scott slid ahead of Collins for the second place position.  Collins caught the left rear quarter panel of Scott as the two came out of the corner and when Scott started to lose control, Collins finished him off bringing out the race’s first caution.

Williams put his car on cruise control for the next twenty laps, but had to ward off a final challenge from Stockbridge’s Trey White.  Williams would keep the hard charging White behind him to capture his first checkered flag of the season.  White ran a very strong second ahead of Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher, Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris and LaGrange’s Jamie Carr.  Collins would end up six after racing from the back of the pack after the altercation with Craig Scott.

Greenville’s Thomas Mewborn was looking to get his first win of the season in the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.  The divisional points leader for the B Cadets has been shut out of victory lane this year, but has finished in the runner-up spot on seven nights.  Mewborn would be the lucky man to draw the pole position and was hoping to keep all behind him and take home win number one.

Mewborn was on his way until a lap five restart when he ran to hard into the first turn pushing his car to the top side of the race track.  Dow Kirkland shot past into the lead spot while Mewborn rallied to stay in second.  Newnan’s Ricky Payton was working a ill-handling race car to hold down third in front of Newnan’s Marcus Caswell.

Caswell worked past Mewborn at the halfway point of the race and then tried to reel in Kirkland.  But the laps would run out before Caswell could mount any challenge to give Kirkland his first win since the final weekend of April.  Caswell ended up in second ahead of the previous Saturday night’s winner Scott Duffey.

Austin ‘The Grantville Grenade’ Horton was poised to win his first Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock feature as he led every lap until the 16th circuit.  Horton was holding a three car length lead over Hobby Stock points leader Clifton Moran when his right rear tire popped off the rim.  Moran moved by and collected his tenth win of the season.  Newnan’s Rusty ‘Rocketman’ Johnson finished second ahead of Gary Parker from Barnesville.  Parker was making his first start in the Hobby Stocks after two and half successful seasons competing in the Mini Stock class.

Newnan’s Dorough Bright changed the number on his race car hoping for a change in his luck this season.  Bright has experienced engine troubles, suspension problems and just plain old bad luck throughout his 2012 campaign.

He may be more superstitious than ever as he piloted his newly adorned D7 Ford Mustang to victory ahead of Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson and Hogansville’s Tim Collier.  Newnan’s Brandon Bright and Bobby Arnold rounded out the Mini Stocks top five.

Johnson’s and Brandon Bright’s finishes coupled together with the absence of points leader Stephen Hill and Parker’s decision to race in the Hobby Stocks has created a log jam for the points lead in the four cylinder stock car division.  Hill, Parker, Brandon Bright and Rocky Johnson will come into this Saturday (July 7) night’s Mid-Season Championship event separated by only a few points.  Anyone of the drivers could capture the halfway point title.

The Bombers crowned another new winner as Griffin’s Doug Frazier outlasted David Johnson for the Bomber feature win.

Senoia Raceway will host their Mid-Season Championships this Saturday, July 7.  The points leader in each one of the weekly divisions will receive the honor of mid-season champion.  The races will be contested in each division with final results in the features determining the top man at the mid-year point.
