Despite leading 49 of the 50 laps in Friday night’s Late Model feature at Anderson Motor Speedway in Anderson, SC, Randy Porter’s win could hardly be called an easy victory.
During practice session Porter’s car was on pit road more than it was on the track because he had several problems with the car. Some of the problems were taken care of before qualifying but Porter was only able to post the fifth fastest time. Neil Meredith posted the fast time of the night with a qualifying lap at 15.301 seconds. Following qualifying the dice was rolled and it was a six. This placed Porter on the front row but several bystanders did not believe Porter had it this night.
Marty Ward qualified sixth and started on the pole, but on the first attempt to start the race Ward jumped and was sent to the back of the pack. This allowed the third fastest qualifier, Anthony Anders, to move up to the pole position.
On the next attempt to start the race Porter had an excellent start which gave him the momentum to take the lead. Porter was able to nail down the lead at the end of lap but by lap eight Anthony Anders was glued to his rear bumper. Anders kept the pressure on Porter for the next sixteen laps and even grabbed the lead once but a caution came out before the end of the lap.
Meanwhile, Justin Sorrow worked his way from the rear of the ten car field and moved to the second position 24. He then proceeded to keep the pressure on Porter. The two batted repeatedly and Sorrow even led lap twenty seven by a nose.
While Porter struggled to maintain his lead in the race a couple of drivers were battling just to finish the race. Marty Ward came from the rear three times before he crossed the finish line in the fourth position. The first time Ward moved to fourth before he spun out in turn two. The second time Ward moved to third before Neil Meredith got into the back of his car, causing Ward to spin. Ward did not appear happy about this when he drove up beside Meredith’s car once he got his car turned back around.
The third time Ward moved to fourth and that is where he crossed the finish line. Amanda Lynch and BJ Thrasher were involved in several mishaps before Lynch exited her car and physically hit Thrasher’s windshield with her hands. Thrasher reentered the race and Lynch did too. On the next lap Lynch hit Thrasher’s car in the side which did more damage to her car than his and removed her from the race.
Following the victory Porter thanked all of the people that helped him and wanted them to know that without all the help he would not have even made the race much less have won it. Justin Sorrow finished second. Marty Ward was awarded third after Neil Meredith, who crossed the finish line third, failed post race inspection. Ralph Carnes finished fourth. Anthony Anders finished fifth.
Anthony Cordell picked up the win in the Super Renegade race and finally put an end to the Tollisons’ dominance in the division. Barry Tollison Jr. and Whitey Suttles started on the front row of the race, while Anthony Cordell barely got his car unloaded and on the track before the race started.
Suttles got a great jump and had the lead as the field entered turn one but lost the lead as the field headed down the back stretch. A lap later Suttles dropped to the back of the field and coasted into the pits with a broken power steering system.
Tollison Jr. led the first five laps of the race while Cordell came from the rear of the seven car field. Soon after Cordell moved to the second position, he went after Tollison Jr. On lap six Cordell went past Tollison Jr. on the high side.
Once out front, Cordell pulled to a couple of car length advantage and held it the remainder of the race. Cordell became only the third winner this season in the Super Renegade race and the first without a last name of Tollison. Barry Tollison Jr. finished second. Barry Tollison Sr. finished third. Samuel Staggs finished fourth. Tony Leslie finished fifth.
Chad Campbell grabbed the victory in the B-Mini Stock race. The win was the fourth of the season for Campbell and made him the man to be reckoned with entering the B-Mini Championship race which is set for July 15.
David Darnell and Brad Burdette battled the first lap of the race with Darnell taking the lead at the end of the lap. Campbell moved to the second position on lap four and immediately began to cut into Darnell’s advantage. By lap seven Campbell was glued to Darnell’s rear bumper. He made a bid for the lead on laps eight and nine before a caution came out.
On the restart Campbell and Darnell battled side by side with Campbell taking the lead on lap ten. Once out front Campbell pulled away for a convincing victory. Darnell finished second. Chuck Mitchell finished third. Ben Kay finished fourth. Avery Burgess finished fifth.
Shawn Campbell beat all comers in the Talking Phonebook Renegade race.
Blake Gregory won the heat race for the Renegade cars and grabbed the lead at the end of the first lap during the main. Gregory held the top spot the first six laps before he was passed by Campbell. Several cars went by Gregory the following lap.
Once out front, Campbell pulled out to a five car length advantage and held it the remainder of the race. Steve Guthrie finished second. Alex Guthrie finished third. Blake Gregory finished fourth. Tracy Robertson finished fifth.
Russell Powell topped the field in the C-Mini Stock race. Powell led every lap of the race on his way to his fifth victory of the season. Jack Kelly ran side by side with Powell from laps four through seven but that was the only time anyone got close to Powell. Kelly finished second. Brandon Segars finished third. Elizabeth Lockwood finished fourth.
Will Ragsdale came home with the victory in the B-M Modified race. Alan Mitchell led the first two laps before Ragsdale battled past him. Once out front, Ragsdale pulled to a five car length advantage which he held the remainder of the race. The victory was the first of the season for Ragsdale. Mitchell finished second. Austin Northcutt finished third. Casey Tucker finished fourth. Tim Stokes finished fifth.
Tommy Davis grabbed the win in the Front Wheel Drive race. Tim Ervin grabbed the lead at the start of the race but was passed by Wayne Cowart before the end of the first lap. Cowart led until lap four when he was passed by Tommy Davis. Davis pulled away from Cowart and led the remainder of the laps and picked up his first victory of the season. Wayne Cowart finished second. Michael Staton finished third. Justin Cone finished fourth. Ervin finished fifth.
Racers’ Edge, the official parts distributor for Anderson Motor Speedway, presented two awards to the competitors on Friday night. Wayne Hammond received the Racers’ Edge Hard Luck Award, while Justin Sorrow received the Racers’ Edge Hard Charger Award.
