Glenn Morris Leads New Faces To Senoia Victory Lane

Glenn Morris ran across the track and kissed his wife after capturing his first win at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA Saturday night.  The Fayetteville, GA driver has competed every night since the track reopened as a dirt track in April 2010, but had never reached victory lane.  He was one of four different drivers to take home the laurels on a tough Saturday night of racing at the 3/8ths mile bull ring.

Morris was joined in celebration by Douglasville’s Erik Hogsed who topped the Mini Stock Mania special event and Moreland’s Michael Mills who bested the field of Bombers.  Both were new winners at Senoia Raceway.  Newnan’s Corey Payton was awarded the victory for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets after first time winner Thomas Mewborn was disqualified for crossing the scales five pounds light.  Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran of Carrollton was a repeat winner in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks.

Love it or hate it, the dice roll in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models can be your best friend or your worst enemy.  LaGrange’s Tod Darda hates it at this point after the fastest qualifier for the second straight week rolled a four to invert the top four positions for the main event.

“We came to a race track,” said Colby Darda.  “Not a casino.”

Darda was the benefactor of the dice roll a few weeks back and was leading the feature when his Darda Tire sponsored Chevrolet broke and dropped from the field.  But that night was long forgotten after the dice roll sent him to the second row for the second time.

This week’s lucky man was Glenn Morris and he did not disappoint his long waiting fans.  Morris worked side by side with point’s leader ‘Racin’ Jason Williams through the first lap.  Locust Grove’s Williams let Morris slide high in turn three as he shot down low out of the fourth turn.  Morris and Williams swapped lanes on the track, but did not change positions as Morris would secure the top spot out of the second turn on lap two.

Darda faded from his number four starting spot after trying to work the high side of the track several laps.  Stockbridge’s Trey White and Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher moved up to run third and fourth behind Morris and Williams leaving Darda in fifth.

On lap eight, Darda was trying to sneak under Fulcher coming out of turn four, but the two hooked causing both to slide down the track and into the front stretch concrete.  Laddie Fulcher was caught up in the mess creating a Fulcher sandwich with Darda in the middle.

Morris would hold off several attempts by a surprisingly winless Williams to take home his first career win in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model division at Senoia Raceway.  Williams came home second to pad his points lead over Darda while Trey White ended up third with another very strong showing.

“The invert helped us,” said Morris in victory lane. “The dice roll helps everyone a little.  But, I will take it.  It’s been a long time coming.”

Greenville’s Thomas Mewborn came into Saturday night finishing second seven of eight times this season.  Mewborn won the pole position by winning his preliminary heat race and appeared to be a man on a mission.

Mewborn did not disappoint as he built large leads throughout the 20-lap main event for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.  The current divisional point’s leader left Newnan’s Corey Payton chasing him while Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland and Stockbridge’s Jeff Carter tussled for the third place position and West Point’s Charlie Garrett and Ellenwood’s Donnie Whatley worked each other for fifth.

Carter and Kirkland’s fight for position escalated through the latter stages of the race with Kirkland having enough by the final lap.  As the white flag flew over the field, Carter bobbled in turn one enough for Kirkland to get into him.  The result was Kirkland dumping Carter and causing a last lap caution flag.

Mewborn restarted the green, white, checkered finish with 16-year-old young gun Payton on his bumper.  Mewborn would bolt to the lead while Payton’s ride developed problems.  Payton’s car showered the track with sparks heading into the final lap and Jeff Carter, Charlie Garrett and Donnie Whatley were set to take advantage.  As Mewborn crossed the finish line, Payton was holding back the angry mob to finish second.

Unfortunately, Mewborn retains the monkey on his back and will have to wait at least one more week to become a 2012 winner.  Mewborn’s car was found to be five pounds light at the scales and disqualified.  That turn of events gave Payton his second win of the season.

“It is my fault,” said Thomas Mewborn’s father Michael.  “The car was running hot and I removed the hood to get some air to the engine.  The hood weighs seven pounds.”

“I hate winning races that way,” added Corey Payton.  “Thomas ran a great race and deserved the win.  It would not have mattered if he was fifty pounds heavy tonight.”

Mewborn retains his top position in the points despite the disqualification.  He had built a solid lead over the first two months of the season and will go into next weekend’s racing card as the point’s leader for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets.

Douglasville’s Erik Hogsed used a late race restart to capture the top spot in the special feature race for the Mini Stocks.  USA Repaints sponsored an added purse main event for the four cylinder weekly stock car class and Hogsed took home the $300 pay day after scooting past Newnan’s Brandon Bright.

Bright had led the feature race since overtaking the number one spot from Newnan’s Joe Spencer on lap four.  Spencer dropped back in the running order allowing Hogsed and Barnesville’s Gary Parker to slide past.  Hogsed and Parker entertained the crowd with a classic Senoia Raceway battle for the middle stages of the extended lap main.

In the end, Hogsed topped the field and took home his first win of the season at Senoia Raceway.  LaGrange’s Stephen Hill made a late charge to finish in second ahead of Douglasville’s Rocky Johnson, Parker and Bright.

“I think something went wrong with Brandon’s car there at the end,” said Hogsed in victory lane.  “It fell off on that final restart.”

Moreland’s Michael Mills made it four new faces in victory lane as he became the eighth different feature winner in nine Bomber races this season.  Mills worked past Hoganville’s George Purgason near the halfway point of the feature and then held on for his first win.

The only feature to see a repeat winner on Saturday night was in the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks as Carrollton’s Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran won for the seventh time this season.

This Saturday, June 9^th, Senoia Raceway will get crazy with the second annual Waterless Boat Race taking place along with a full night of points racing for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Newnan Bonding B Cadets, Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers.

The Waterless Boat Race will feature cars pulling boats around the track in a rolling demolition derby.  Teams are not allowed any kind of a trailer so the boats will be literally dragged around the 3/8ths mile track.  Competitors will knock their opponents boats from its mount to the cars and the last one with their boat intact and attached will be the winner.

“It is total boat destruction,” said track announcer Ted Austad.  “It is the wildest show you will see this season.”
