The old phrase of “If it’s not broke don’t fix it” was the mantra for Ty Majeski and his team this weekend at the Milwaukee Mile.
Driving a car that was built in 2018 specifically for the Snowball Derby, the car known as “one off” got it’s second win at in the ASA STARS National Tour Father’s Day 100 at this historic West Allis, Wisconsin raceway.
“It’s a good car. It has a nice square body on it, good aero which is huge for here, and fresh McGunegill engine and come out and come race,” the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular said after the win.
Majeski started on the outside of the front row after the re-draw and took the early lead. He would give up the lead after winning the first stage on lap 35 by making a pit stop during a controlled caution.
Lawrenceville, Georgia native Casey Roderick would take over the top spot and lead until the caution flew on lap 60 when Justin Mondeik and Sean Hingorani got together on the backstretch, causing Mondeik to make contact with the outside wall then go sailing straight into the inside barrier until it came to a stop. Mondeik was able to walk away, and Hingorani was sent to the rear for his involvement.
Majeski restarted fifth and would need a turn to get the lead back as he sliced past Luke Fenhaus and Storm to take the lead and go on for the win.
Cole Butcher would get by Roderick in the closing laps to finish second with Roderick earning the final podium spot.
“We were good, but the 91 (Majeski) was even better,” Butcher said. “There are no words to describe how good they were, but we all had an idea we were going to race for second place. I can’t thank Wilson Motorsports enough for providing a great race car and yeah, I would have like gotten the checkered flag for my father, but we can’t have it all.”
Roderick, who won the season opening event at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida, felt that being up front was key to winning the race.
“It was. I felt that our balance changed when we got out front and was able to do really well,” Roderick explained. “I was concerned back in traffic as I was sliding around a little bit off the corner, and once I got out front it was a little better. But, I thought for the chance to win, I had to be a little more secure off of the corner and be able to lean off my right rear a little more, but that was the wrong thing to do, cause it went really tight on me and I wasn’t able to roll the center or stay on the throttle, had to let off to keep the car turned and not wash up. So we will learn from it and know for next time.”
Majeski agreed that being out front was the focus to victory.
“The key of the race was getting out front,” Majeski said. “Casey was good when he had the lead, and I couldn’t pass him when I was behind him and it was the same for him with me.
Carson Hocevar and William Sawalich rounded out the top five.
Gio Ruggerio, Gabe Sommers, Senoia, Georgia’s Bubba Pollard, NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Derek Kraus, and Billy VanMeter rounded out the top10.
