A trio of drivers took to victory lane in World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series action in the southeast over the holiday weekend.
Brandon Overton opened the weekend with a Thursday night win at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina. Ben Watkins followed that on Friday night with his first career series win at Georgia’s Lavonia Speedway. Brandon Sheppard capped off the weekend with a victory at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee.
On Thursday night, Evans, Georgia’s Brandon Overton saved his tires for the end of the race, holding off the competition en route to the win the Rock Gault Memorial at Cherokee Speedway, pocketing $40,000 for his efforts.
Despite taking it easy on his tires, worry still sank in over the last few laps, especially when he saw Jonathan Davenport and Chris Ferguson, who were in the top-five, go to the pits.
“I was behind (Davenport) the whole time, and I was like he really wasn’t that sideways,” Overton said after recording his fourth series win of the season and the 17th of his career. “That worried me, so I just slowed down as much as I could and was just trying to baby it to the end.
“I lost a race over here for 10 grand coming to the checkered, so that was playing back through my mind, and I was like, slow down and don’t blow the tire off.”
Chris Madden finished in second, with Jimmy Owens in third, Trent Ivey in fourth and NASCAR Cup Series ace Kyle Larson in fifth.
On Friday night, the tour moved to the Peach State and Lavonia Speedway, where en Watkins led all 40 laps en route to the win in the Charlie Mize Memorial.
Mize is the fifth driver to win his first career series victory in 2021.
“When we caught lap traffic, they were two wide, and they were racing,” Watkins said. “With the dirty track, it kind of upset my car a little bit, and it was hard to maneuver through them. The way the cautions played out, I was not upset.”
Three cautions plagued the second half of the feature, but they couldn’t have come at a better time for Watkins. He knew he had just enough laps to avoid dealing with traffic and a potential battle with second place Tyler Bruening.
“We had that restart with 11 (laps) to go, I believe it was, and I was hoping that was just enough time we wouldn’t catch lap traffic too bad,” Watkins said. “Right at the end, we caught them and had just enough of a lead to kind of settle in there, and it played out perfectly for us.”
Bruening finished second, with Brandon Sheppard third, Brandon Overton fourth and Zack Mitchell fifth.
On Saturday night, Brandon Sheppard took another step forward to writing a new page of series history with a win at Volunteer Speedway.
It marks Sheppard’s 77th series triumph—one win away from tying Josh Richards at the top of the all-time wins list (78). Even though he’s knocking at history’s door, it’s not something that’s on his mind.
“It’s really cool, but I just try not to think about it, you know, because when you think about it, it’s gets in your head, and then you want to win too bad, and then it messes you up,” Sheppard said.
Sheppard took the lead early from Chris Madden, and drove away for his eighth series win of the season.
Madden, Michael Chilton, Tyler Bruening, and Dennis Erb, Jr. rounded out the top five.
The World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series is next slated to The Rev in Monroe, Louisiana on September 24-25 for a weekend doubleheader. Visit WorldofOutlaws.com for more information.
