It was a pair of Peach State racers taking home the top prizes in Southern Super Series asphalt Super Late Model action over the weekend at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.

On Friday night, it was veteran Bubba Pollard from Senoia, Georgia taking the victory, while youngster Chandler Smith from Talking Rock, Georgia scored the win on Saturday night.

On Friday night, the 34-year-old Pollard added to his legacy at 5 Flags Speedway by scoring his 23rd career victory at the famed half-mile raceway.

At 34, Bubba Pollard has penned quite the legacy at Five Flags Speedway.

Pollard plodded his way from a starting spot of 17th in the 34-car field and outclassed runner-up Chandler Smith, who drives fulltime in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, down the stretch for an improbable win.

“We had a good racecar,” a relieved Pollard said. “I knew we were fast, and we just had to make it to the front. There was a point where I really thought it was over.

“We just kept making gains there in the middle stages of the race. We drove it hard and drove it to the front.”

Pollard moved into second on lp 91 and quickly began closing the gap to then leader Smith. He reached Smith’s bumper with three to go and the duo were door-to-door as they raced into turn 3. Pollard finally pulled ahead on lap 98 and was immediately into the wind.

“I’ve got a lotta laps around here,” Pollard said after the $10,000 win. “I knew when we took off on lap 1, the car was good. I just needed to get to the front, and we were able to do that.”

Smith was the class of the field most of the night, leading 94 laps, but had to settle for second, while Monroe, Georgia’s Jake Garcia made it an all Georgia podium in third.

Stephen Nasse finished in fourth, with Marietta, Georgia’s Kyle Plott in fifth.

On Saturday night, Chandler Smith got his revenge for coming up short the night before, as he collected $15,000 for the victory.

“I’ve really been having my faith tested the last few months,” said Smith, who has endured a stretch of bad fortune behind the wheel of the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 18 Toyota on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. “I just kept praying and believing. It ain’t easy making these things go fast. Thanks to all my guys.”

Smith took the lead on lap 30 and crushing the 28-car field. Smith also delivered Donnie Wilson Motorsports its first checkered flag at 5 Flags Speedway after more than two desperate decades trying.

“Everything had to happen right,” Smith said. “Last night, the cautions didn’t fall in our favor. Tonight, everything worked out. Hey, we finally got one for these Wilson guys. Man, I’m excited to get the monkey of my back. I’ve had horrible luck in anything I’ve been in this season.”

For the second straight night, it was an all-Georgia podium, with Lawrenceville, Georgia’s Casey Roderick in second and Garcia with his second straight third place finish.

Michael Atwell and NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones rounded out the top five.
