Racers Double Up In Thursday Thunder Action At AMS

Drivers got a chance to double up at Atlanta Motor Speedway last week, as Thursday Thunder action was held on Wednesday and Thursday night on the track’s quarter-mile “Thunder Ring.”

Wednesday night’s racing was highlighted by the WJP Investments Young Lions feature. Isaac Bevin trailed leader Giovanni Ruggiero for the majority of the race, but a caution with 4 laps to go set up a late race restart. Bevin seized the opportunity and made a clever move to pass then leader Parker Eatmon. From there Bevin didn’t look back, holding off Eatmon to claim the victory.

Later in the evening, the Outlaw feature showcased a strong battle for the win. Jacob Bradley started on the pole, but he wouldn’t stay there long. Garrett Erwin passed Bradley right out of the start, but Bradley trailed close behind waiting for the right opportunity to take the top spot back. That opportunity came in the closing laps when Bradley made the move going into turn 1 to pass Erwin. Erwin made an attempt to reclaim the lead, but it wasn’t enough as Bradley drove into victory lane.

In earlier action, Michael Gannon took home The Byron Powersports Semi-Pro feature after multiple cautions, while Beckham Malone dominated the Bandits feature race.

The night was capped with The Associates Group Pro Legends race and the Masters feature. Caleb Heady dominated the Pro feature and won handedly over the chasing field. The Masters feature was the last race of the night. Bill Plemons, Jr. claimed the victory after Phillip Young and Robbie Woodall tangled while battling for the lead.

In other feature action Wednesday night, Emma Britt prevailed in the Fr8Auctions Rookie Bandolero feature race after leading from flag to flag, while Luke Yarbrough was the winner in the Chargers feature.

On Thursday night, the racing action was initially delayed due to rain at Atlanta Motor Speedway. However the track drying crew bested Mother Nature, getting the quarter-mile Thunder Ring suitable for competition in short order, allowing for more exciting bumper to bumper action.

The WJP Investments Young Lions feature race supplied the most exciting race. As the race unfolded, Giovanni Ruggiero got out to an early lead, and his persistence showed in the first 10 laps of the race, as he fought off Parker Eatmon and Isaac Bevin, who applied pressure. Late cautions gave Eatmon an opportunity to seize the lead from Ruggiero, but at that point the battle was far from over.

Eatmon led going into lap 16, but was unable to fend off a challenge from Isaac Bevin, who took advantage of the inside lane going into turn 1. Bevin’s win did not come easy as Eatmon and Ruggiero stayed in close pursuit all the way to the checkered flag.

In the Byron Powersports Semi-Pro feature race, Graham Campbell entered the evening fresh off the disappointment of a strong run that ended in sparks and frustration. Campbell was battling for the lead late in the running of Wednesday night’s Semi-Pro feature when contact sent him spinning out of contention.

Campbell would not be denied again on Thursday, as he got off to a hot start and did not turn back, dominating the race from flag to flag to secure the victory.

The Associates Group Pro feature and Masters feature looked like encore performances of Wednesday night’s features, as veteran drivers Caleb Heady and Bill Plemons, Jr. each earned back-to-back victories by claiming the checkered flags in their divisions Thursday night.

Clay Hocutt was strong all night in the Outlaws division, earning the pole position and leading throughout. However, Garrett Erwin and Kaleb Bradley gave Hocutt a run for his money, stalking him throughout the feature race. Ultimately, Hocutt stayed calm under pressure and claimed the checkered flag winning the Outlaw division for round 3.

In other feature action Wednesday night, Carson Cauble drove into victory lane for his first Thursday Thunder Rookie Bandolero feature win. Additionally, Beckham Malone won the Bandits feature race for his second consecutive win, while Luke Yarbrough did the same in the Chargers feature.
