Tyler Millwood opened the 52nd racing season at Dixie Speedway by scoring the win in the Super Late Model feature at the Woodstock, Georgia raceway.
The Kingston, Georgia native set quick time in qualifying and when the green flag flew for the feature, Millwood jumped to an early lead over Justin Shipley. On lap 13, the caution flag flew as Jamie Oliver slowed in turn 3. On the restart, a six car pile up caused a red flag and sent Jake Knowles, Tim Thornton, and Scott Hall to the pit area.
When racing resumed, Shawn Chastain passed Shipley for second on lap 14. But, Millwood had checked out and was not challenged the rest of the race. Millwood earned $2000 for the win.
Chastain finished in second, with Shipley in third, Jason Croft in fourth and Wayne Echols in fifth.
In other action, Toccoa Georgia’s Drew Benfield made the long haul to Woodstock for the season opener pay off by leading every lap en route to the Steelhead 525 Late Model feature. It marked Benfield’s first win at Dixie Speedway.
Taylor Puckett followed Benefield to the checkered flag, with Dale Thurman in third, Jacque Daniel in fourth and Daniel Wilson in fifth.
The Crate Late Model feature provided some of the best action of the night and allowed Jake Knowles to atone for the abrupt ending to his Super Late Model race. Kyler Haygood grabbed the early lead with Knowles applying heavy pressure. Late in the race, Chase Oliver joined the fray, moving past Knowles. A lap 19 caution set up a one lap sprint to the finish. Knowles used the high groove to pass Oliver and Jackson, bolting from third to first on the final lap.
With 35 602 Sportsmen competitors registered for the season opener, track officials decided to run two features. In the first feature, fast qualifier Chris Hough launched from the pole and led all 15 laps in a caution-free race. In the second feature, Sawyer Tinker shot from the outside pole, passing Hayden Swaney. The second feature was also caution free with Tinker holding off Swaney for the win.
Jeremy Williams to lead all 15 laps in the Economy Bombers feature to score the win. Travis Smith, Andrew Findley, Garrett Williams and Eric Hamby rounded out the top five.
Justin Wakefield started deep in the Open Wheel Modified field, but took the lead on lap 6. Wakefield held on to win over Robert George in second, .Gary McPherson in third, Bo Jordan in fourth and Roscoe Collins in fifth.
James Drummond took a wild ride during the Street Stinger feature. While battling with Rick Ricks for second place, Drummond tangled with a lapped car on the back straight and barrel rolled twice. Drummond was able to walk away uninjured. Shaun Harper scored the victory, with Jason Young second, Nathan Peardon third, Jonathan Nelson fourth and Eli Levine fifth.
A small car demolition derby capped the events Saturday night. Darren Ray had the last car running for the win.
