With a coveted “Wally” trophy on the line for the winner, Brent Wheeler stepped up to the challenge on Saturday at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia in Summit ET Drag Racing Series action.
The Watkinsville, Georgia racer defeated Steve Wagner from Jefferson, Georgia in the Pro final to pick up the win and take home the trophy, made in the likeness of NHRA Drag Racing founder Wally Parks.
Wheeler, in a 1966 Dodge, won after Wagner’s 1971 Dodge Duster got out of the groove and had to let off the gas. That allowed Wheeler to slow as well en route to the win.
Wheeler dialed in on a 6.07 and ran a 6.258 ET at 89.23 MPH and a 0.058 reaction time. Wagner dialed in on a 6.31 and ran a 7.016 ET at 72.74 MPH and a 0.006 reaction.
Other Wally trophy winners on the day included Michael Bruce in Super Pro, Dickey Forrester in Sportsman, Jayton Duggar in Jr. Street and Tim Sutton in Motorcycle.
