Zeke Shell recorded his first win of the 2019 season at Tennessee’s Kingsport Speedway on Friday night.

The defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Highlands Sign Shop Late Model Stock Car champion from Johnson City, Tennessee edged out the field by wheeling his Ford Mustang to the victory around the .375-mile concrete raceway.

Joey Trent earned the pole with a fast-time of 15.140 seconds, but with the roll of the dice the top four qualifiers were inverted for the 60-lap feature, putting Shell and Bryson Dennis on the front row,

Shell jumped out to the early lead while others jockeyed for position behind him. He would go largely unchallenged until lap 22, when Nik Williams closed on his back bumper.

On several occasions, Williams stuck his nose to the inside of the leader as they raced off the corners. But each time Shell managed to close the door and maintain his position. The last thing Shell wanted to see was a late race caution, but that’s what happened when Trent and Wayne Hale got together between turns three and four on lap 51, sending with both cars spinning.

Shell chose the inside line for the double-file restart and back under green he and Williams raced into the first turn, with Shell getting the advantage to retake the lead. Williams tried time and again to make the pass, but to no avail.

On the final lap, Williams used his front bumper to loosen Shell, allowing him to get a run off of the second turn and down the backstretch. But Shell held his line through the final corners, and drove to the victory.

Williams had to settle for second, with Dennis in third, Hale in fourth and Trent in fifth.

In other action, father Royce Peters held off son Austin Peters for the Super Transmission Modified Street feature victory. Rusty Clendenin finished in third, with Kevin Wolfe in fourth and Alex Miller in fifth.

Bruce Crumbley was the winner in the Pure 4 feature, with Josh Detwiler, Kenny Absher, Bucky Smith and Keith Helton rounding out the top five.

Kevin Canter scored the win in the Mod 4 feature. Dennis Arnold finished in second, with Billy Duty in third, Chris Amburgey in fourth and Hershell Robinette in fifth.

Tony Dockery was the winner in the Pure Street feature, with Doug Austin in second, Jay Swecker in third, Ricky Payne in fourth and Jessica Payne in fifth.
