For David McCoy, visiting victory lane is not unusual. But Sunday afternoon’s victory in the Georgia State Championship Limited Late Model feature at Georgia’s Lavonia Speedway was particularly pleasing.
It marked the second straight state crown for the Franklin, North Carolina driver, as he bested a stout field of drivers to take the win.
Kenny Collins set fast time in qualifying for the 35 lap event. On the first lap, McCoy won the drag race to turn one and never showed signs of giving up the top spot.
Lap traffic was beginning to be a problem for the front runners when a car spun in turn 4 with five laps remaining. That bunched the field back up for a restart. From then on it was clear sailing for McCoy, as he led every lap en route to the win.
Travis Pennington made a late race move to capture second from Kenny Collins. Drew Collins finished in fourth, with Jimmy Johnson rounding in fifth.
In the 604 Crate division race, Kenny Collins, once again, set fast time and started on the pole. Jensen Ford took control of the race from the outside of the front row at the outset, and led wire-to-wire to the victory. Collins finished in second, with Logan Roberson in third, Travis Pennington in fourth and Drew Kennedy in fifth.
David Smith took the win in the Hobby 602 division feature. Josh Thurmond came home in second, with Nick Sellers, Dale Timms and Brandon Stroud rounding out the top five.
Other event winners included Kyle Gordon in Modified Street, Evan Brown in Stock V8, Kevin Kelly in Stock 4, Joey Kelly in Front Wheel Drive and Preston Kelly in Beginner 4 Cylinder.
