The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series regular season finale at Tennessee’s Kingsport Speedway was held Labor Day weekend. But there was still life left in “The Concrete Jungle” to roar one more time this year with a special event only for drivers that hadn’t won a race since the track reopened for weekly racing in 2011.
Hometown hero Dillon Hodge made the most of the opportunity, as he capped off his rookie season with a win the in 60-lap Late Model Stock Car feature on Friday night.
The 15-year-old Kingsport, Tennessee native jumped out to the lead on the drop of the green flag from the second starting position over pole winner Bryson Dennis.
With the field jockeying for position behind the leaders, the race ran caution free for the duration. When the checkered flag flew, it was Hodge taking the victory, with Dennis in second.
Carter Davison rolled home in third, with Trey Lane in fourth and Dale Cline in fifth.
In other action, veteran driver Greg Killen climbed behind the wheel of a race car for the first time in 23 years, but edged out Austin Peters for the win in the Modified Street feature. Alex Miller finidhed third, followed by Derek Lane in fourth and Kevin Canter in fifth.
Josh Detwiler scored the win in the Pure 4 feature. The win came after a door-to-door battle on the last lap ended with Craig Phelps ended when Phelps transmission came out of gear. William Hale finished in second, with Dustin Kestner in third and Brandon Byington in fourth. Phelps coasted across the line in fifth.
The Mod 4 feature saw a back-and-forth fight between Dennis Arnold and Mitch Gibson for the lead. That fight ended when the duo tangled in the fourth turn and hit the wall, collecting third place Zack Fritz in the mayhem.
Dalton Thomas avoided the trouble and went on to score the victory. Hershell Robinette, Chris Coleman, James Deese and Marvin Turnmire, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Mike Mays of St. Paul, Virginia, and Sammy Ferguson battled for the lead throughout the Pure Street feature, but it was Mays taking the victory. Ferguson finished second, with Bryan Young third, Eugene Norton fourth and Brian Eggers fifth.
