Michael Page wrote a page of short track racing history in the Peach State over the weekend.
The Douglasville, Georgia speedster became the first driver in the history of the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series to win three straight races.
Page started his historic run on Friday night with a win at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Georgia. He followed up on Saturday night with a win at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia. Page capped the weekend off with his third win at Georgia’s Rome Speedway on Sunday night.
Page dominated on Friday night, as he set fast time, started on the pole and led all 50 laps en route to the $3,000 victory at Boyd’s Speedway.
But it still came down to a final lap sprint. Page was set to take the white flag with a half-lap advantage over the Ronnie Johnson in second place, but the white flag gave way to the yellow flag when Chip Brindle spun in turn four.
On the restart, Page was able to get away, leaving Johnson to battle with Jake Knowles for the runner-up spot. Knowles would finish in second, with Johnson third, Riley Hickman in fourth and Cruz Skinner in fifth.
Page said the caution flag was the last thing he wanted to see at the end of the race.
“With that long of run under green, you just never know if your tires are going to fire back up after a caution,” Page said. “The car stayed good, and it’s always good. I didn’t know how big of a lead I had, but I knew Ronnie Johnson was in second, and I had better be smart, be patient, and not give up too much in lapped traffic because one wrong move and he would have been right there.”
Local division winners on the night included Ethan Hunter in Crate Late Models, Derek Franks in Hobby, Colton Jackson in Sportsman, Lamar Hughes in Street Stocks and Mark Ramsey in Development Drivers.
On Saturday night at Dixie Speedway, Page passed Johnson in lapped traffic on lap 15, and pulled away to the $2,000 victory.
“Ronnie Johnson has been a hero of mine since I was a little boy, and when we came up on the lapped car, he made the move to the top, and I went to the inside to take the lead,” Page said. “We had a little harder tire on the right-front than Ronnie did, and the car kept getting faster when the tire came in.”
Johnson picked up his sixth straight top five series finish with a second place result. Knowles finished in third, with Chase King in fourth and Zach Pilcher in fifth.
The only caution flag of the race came out on lap 20 when Mark Page stalled on the high side of turn three with a small fire under the hood of his car. The Dixie Speedway Safety Crew put out the fire and Mark Page was uninjured.
Local division winners on the night included Zach Leonhardi in Super Late Models, Colby Kilgore in Crate Late Models, Daniel Brewer in 602 Sportsman, Billy Dean in Economy Bombers and Kenny Clark in Street Stingers.
On Sunday night, Michael Page took the lead on the second lap around the half-mile Rome Speedway, and went on to score his third straight victory on the weekend.
In total, Page pocketed $9,000 for three days work.
“I had an awesome race car all three nights, and I don’t know how anything could be any better to run that hard for that long, and for everything to stay together,” Page said. “This Stinger Race Car is really good, and anyone that knows anything about these race cars can see that the corner speed is as fast as the straightaway speed.”
Jake Knowles led the first lap of the 50-lap race, and tried to challenge Page for the lead on a series of restarts, but had to settle for the second spot for the second time in three nights.
Johnson came home in the third, with King and Pilcher rounding out the top five.
Local division winners on the night included Tyler Millwood in Super Late Models, Tod Hernandez in SteelHead /502, T.J. Brittain in Crate Late Models, Daniel Brewer in 602 Sportsman, Eric Hamby in Economy Bombers and Kenny Clark in Street Stingers.
The next race for the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series will be on September 15 at Georgia’s Cochran Motor Speedway. For more information, visit http://www.DurrenceLayneRacing.com.
