Mark Newton was in the right place at the right time on Saturday night at Georgia’s Senoia Raceway.
Newton watched the lead cars spin each other before sneaking past for the victory in the Mini Stock feature on the 3/8-mile clay speedway.
“That win came with help from my dad,” said Newton afterwards speaking of his recently passed father. “Duck, this one’s for you.”
Newton ran among the top five for most of the way before making a move late in the race. Those moves made it possible for the last lap theatrics where race leader Tommy Faulkner overtook Russell Team before losing control of his car in the final turn of the final lap. Faulkner collected Grant Roberts, allowing Newton to scoot past on the outside.
An ecstatic Newton pumped his fist out the window as he crossed the finish line first. Faulkner and Roberts regained enough control to finish in second and third, respectively.
In the Limited Late Model feature, Shane Fulcher held the lead going into the final five laps, but Joey Armistead was able to track him down. Fulcher’s car began to push up the track in the final stage, allowing Armistead to dive low in turn one on the final lap. But Armistead lost control of the car spinning which brought out a caution and set up a one lap dash for the win.
Mark Page started third on the restart and pounced drove his car hard into the first turn using the high side to bypass Fulcher and Craig Scott. Fulcher charged hard into the third turn trying to retake the lead from Page, but lost control. Page kept steady, winning the race ahead of Scott in second and Dennis Hale in third.
Clint Smith scored the win in the Crate Late Model feature, with Ashton Winger in second, Marty Lunsford in third, Jake Rainey in fourth and Mason Massey in fifth.
Saturday night’s Hot Shots feature was dedicated to division competitor Dean Williams, who passed away in his sleep on July 2. The track made the decision that the points chase for the division would be stopped as of July 3 and Williams, who was leading the standings at the time of his death was declared the season champion
Nathan Farrow led of the race before losing the lead to Jordan Wallace with only two laps remaining. Farrow held on for second ahead of Brian Wallace in third, Gene Williams in fourth and Stacey Henderson in fifth.
Dorough Bright won his seventh straight Bombers feature. Curtis Turner finished in second, with Mike Nelms in third.
