A pair of Georgia drivers kept a firm hold on Victory Lane over the weekend in Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series action.
Brandon Overton won at Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway and Georgia’s Swainsboro Raceway, while Austin Horton took the victory at Georgia’s Rome Speedway.
On Thursday night, Overton led from start to finish on at Toccoa Raceway to earn his sixth career series victory. The win was worth $3,500 for the Evans, Georgia speedster.
Casey Roberts and Brandon Overton would bring the 22-car field to life for the start of the 35-lapper with Overton getting the jump and holding on to the point on the third try of a start. Two cautions slowed the race before the field could complete a lap. Overton would hold off Roberts for the win. Dale McDowell finished in third, followed by Shanon Buckingham in fourth and Cade Dillard in fifth.
Local division winners included Rusty House in Sportsman 602/Hobby, Kevin Kelly in Stock 4 and Alex Woodard in Front Wheel Drives.
On Friday night, Overton overtook Roberts on lap 47 and held on for the remaining six laps for the win and the $5,300 payday at Swainsboro Raceway.
Two cautions and one red flag slowed the event. The first caution flag came on the opening lap as a multi-car incident halted the race. On the restart, a red flag stopped the field for the second time. On lap 27, the final caution flag flew as Dennis Franklin came to a stop in turn four with a flat tire.
Roberts finished in second, followed by McDowell in third, Joey Coulter in fourth and Ross Bailes in fifth.
On Saturday, it was Overton scoring his third straight win in the series’ second night at Swainsboro Raceway.
Three caution flags slowed the 53-lapper. The first caution flew on the opening lap as Brian Connor, Roberts and Aaron Ridley tangled in turn two. Once underway, the race would remain green until lap 50 when Roberts slowed with three laps to go. On the restart, Buckingham slowed with a flat right-rear tire to again bring out the caution flag.
Back under green, Overton held off Bailes for the race win and the $5,300 winner’s check. McDowell, Ridley and John Henderson rounded out the top five.
On Sunday night, Austin Horton took the lead away from Ridley on lap 47, and went on to score his first career series victory.
The Newnan, Georgia driver pocketed $5,300 for his efforts.
Ridley jumped out to the race lead early and held the point for the first 22 laps until Michael Page took the lead on the outside in turn four coming to complete lap 23. Page would lead until lap 46 when he got caught up in a pile of cars in turn two and would have to relinquish the race lead back to Ridley.
Ridley would lead on the restart, but Horton bypassed him for the top spot on lap 47 and drove to the victory.
Ridley finished second, followed by Ivedent Lloyd in third, Roberts in fourth and Page in fifth.
Local division winners included Landon Bagby in SteelHead/525, Austin Smith in Crate Late Models, Cody Overton in 602 Sportsman, Eric Hamby in Economy Bombers and Chris Bragg in Street Stingers.
