With NASCAR Hall of Famer Rex White in attendance, Lawson Ingold drove to his first career Young Lions victory in Atlanta Motor Speedway’s Thursday Thunder Legends Series action last week.
Ryan Rackley took the lead from the start, with Ingold not far behind. Ingold made his desire for victory known as he made a pass in the grass of turn 1 to take the lead from Rackley on lap 3.
A mistake between fellow competitors led to a restart, which Rackley took the lead back on. However, Ingold was not going down without a fight. He regained the lead from Rackley on lap 8. He would continue to lead the field all the way to the checkered flag, and his first career win.
“I have so much adrenaline right now,” an emotional Ingold said in victory lane. “I finally have the monkey off my back. This just feels amazing right now, I mean, after two years of struggling in this car, trying to figure this out, it finally happened”
In other action, a three-car shootout in the Chargers feature kicked off the night. As the green flag waved, Zac Bacon took the lead from Bob Anderson. Bacon ran away with the lead, keeping Anderson at bay until the checkered flag waved.
Bill Plemons, Jr. and Robbie Woodall faced off at the start of the Master’s division feature. Plemons, Jr. moved out to a two-car advantage over Woodall. Woodall tried to make a pass on lap 16 as the leaders raced in lap traffic, but Plemons, Jr.’s car was just too strong. Plemonsm Jr. would go on to win his third straight feature of the 2018 season.
“My car is running good thanks to my crew chief, Scott Moseley,” explained Plemons, Jr. “He’s good to have on my team, I mean he knows what he’s doing. He used to race here against me and whoop me every time, but now he’s working on my cars and I’m just so very appreciative of it. He really has made me better.”
Plemons, Jr. now holds a six-point lead over Robbie Woodall in the championship standings going into week five.
Cody Hall took advantage of the situation when Rafe Slate and Dawson Fletcher pushed each other out of the groove while racing for the lead on the final lap in the VP Racing Fuels Pro division. That led Hall power by to the victory.
Bryson Matthews took the win in the Rookie Bandolero feature, with Lee Brown in second and Shelby Schell in third.
In the Bandits feature, Kelley Puckett led at the start but could not shake Carson Ruark. Puckett and Ruark exchanged the lead throughout the event but the final three laps belonged to Ruark, who went on to earn his second win of the season.
Sammy Smith was flagged the winner of the Semi-Pro feature, but failed post-race technical inspection, handing the win to Davis Rochester. Andrew Dollar was second, with Jason Treschl in third.
Blaise Maddox took the win in the GRT Racing Driver Development Outlaws Division feature, leading start to finish. Kenneth Henderson came home in second, followed by Kenny Brady in third.
