Kres VanDyke drove to the Memorial Day weekend Late Model Stock Car victory on Friday night at Tennessee’s Kingsport Speedway.

VanDyke set fast-time in qualifying with a lap at 15.085, but an invert of the top five put 14-year-old rookie Trey Bayne, the brother of NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series driver Trevor Bayne, and veteran Robbie Ferguson on the front row.

The duo raced door-to-door over the first couple of laps before Ferguson moved into the lead, while behind them the field jockeyed for position. Four laps in, VanDyke got around Bayne, with Zeke Shell in tow, dropping Bayne back to fourth.

While Ferguson was in command out front holding an eight car-length advantage over VanDyke and Shell, Bayne and Derek Lane were racing hard when contact on the backstretch saw Lane scrape along the outside wall. The intensity between the duo carried over to the following lap racing into the first turn, when contact from Lane sent Bayne spinning between turns one and two on lap 25 to bring out what would be the event’s only caution.

On the restart VanDyke grabbed the lead over Ferguson, with Shell wasting no time overtaking Ferguson to move into second place.

VanDyke cruised to his second win of the season, with Shell in second, Ferguson in third, Ronnie McCarty in fourth and Wayne Hale in fifth.

In other action, Nick Cole edged out rookie Chase Dixon for the win in the Modified Street feature, with Royce Peters in third, Rusty Clendenin in fourth and Alex Miller in fifth.

Keith Helton was the winner in the Pure 4 feature, with Kenny Absher in second, Brandon Sutherland in third, Billy Byington in fourth and William Hale in fifth.

Brad Ball held off Kevin Canter and David Brown to score the Mod 4 feature victory, with Dennis Arnold and Zack Fritz rounding out the top five.

Jay Swecker crossed the finish line third in the Pure Street feature, but when apparent winner David Strong and second -place Chris Neeley both failed post-race technical inspection, Swecker recorded his first win of the season. Brian Eggers was second, with Dustin Smith third, Kevin Darnell fourth and Jessica Payne fifth.

Jeremy Mullins captured the Vintage win.
