It took three weeks for Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, South Carolina to finally get the 2018 season opener in the books.

But for two of the Upsate’s most seasoned asphalt Late Model veterans, it was well worth the wait.

David Roberts and Ralph Carnes both made the trip to Anderson’s victory lane, as they scored wins in Friday night’s twin 40-lap Late Model Stock Car features at the 3/8-mile raceway.

In the first feature, Neil Meredith was fastest in qualifying, but a four car invert would move Roberts to the top spot. The Simpsonville, South Carolina native jumped out to the lead on the drop of the green flag, leaving the field to jockey for position behind him.

Roberts went on to lead wire-to-wire en route to the victory, with Ashton Higgins in second, Trey Gibson in third, R.A. Brown in fourth and Luke Sorrow in fifth.

In the second feature, an eight car invert put Carnes on the pole. On the drop of the green flag, a chain reaction accident behind the leaders set up a restart. Once underway, Kenneth Headen took the lead, but a spin by Brown three laps later paused the action again.

On the restart, Carnes, from Anderson, South Carolina, powered to the lead, with Headen in pursuit. As Carnes clicked off laps in front, Roberts made his way to second. Over the closing laps, Roberts tried to challenge for the top spot, but in the end, it was Carnes scoring his first win in several years.

Roberts had to settle for second, Headen in third, Higgins in fourth and Trey Gibson in fifth.

In other action, Philip Peters charged from his seventh place starting spot to score the Limited feature victory. Devin Kelly finished in second, followed by Jackie Manley in third, Steve Carver in fourth and Smoke Shiflett in fifth.

Austin Northcutt took home the win in the BM Modified feature, with Will Ragsdale in second, Tanner Carter in third, Zak Brown in fourth and Bryan Mitchell in fifth.

Jeffrey Kummer was the winner in the Mini Stock feature. Chad Campbell, David Darnell, Ben Kay and Ryan Howard rounded out the top ten.

Chris Whitfield drove to the victory in the Renegades feature. Justin Southerlin came home in second, with Chad Watt in third, Shawn Campbell in fourth and Carey Smith in fifth.

Isaak Love took top honors in the US Legends feature, with Michael Womack in second, Justin Ashley in third, Cory Hall in fourth and Tristen Love in fifth.

Scott Parker took the win in the Front Wheel Drive feature. Manual Molleda followed in second, with Carey Smith in third, Casey Burkett in fourth and Chris Burkett in fifth.

Anderson Motor Speedway returns to action on Friday, May 4, featuring racing from the Late Model Stock Cars, BM Modifieds, Asphalt Mini Stocks, Renegades, US Legends and Front Wheel Drives.
