Vic Hill celebrated Independence Day Weekend by taking home a $5,000 home state victory on Saturday night.
The Mosheim, Tennessee wheelman scored the win in the 40-lap Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Bonus Series Firecracker 40 at Tennessee’s Tazewell Speedway.
Hill took the lead off the start with Dakotah Knuckles in tow, while Steve Smith, Billy Ogle, Jr., and Dawsonville, Georgia’s Donald McIntosh would go three-wide for third entering turn three on the opening lap of the contest.
Hill stretched his lead by lap five, as Knuckles attempted to fend off the challenges of Smith for second. Meanwhile Ogle, Jr. and McIntosh dueled for the fourth position. Hill would continue to stretch his lead and would catch slower traffic by lap 14, but the racing groove had narrowed up by this point and Hill would elect to ride behind the slower traffic. That allowed the rest of the top five to close in on him.
As the race reached the halfway mark, Hill was able to clear a pair of the slower cars and open his lead back up a bit. But Hill caught more traffic on lap 26 and again chose to stay in line, allowing Knuckles and Smith to again close the gap.
Despite fighting brake issues the rest of the way, Hill went on to score the victory, with Knuckles taking second and Smith finishing third. Ogle, Jr. crossed the finish line in fourth, with McIntosh in fifth.
Jason Welshan, Austin Neely, Jeff Neubert, Carder Miller, and Chad Ogle rounded out the top ten.
The Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Bonus Series was next slated to compete at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, Georgia on July 4, but wet weather led to the postponement of the event to Saturday, August 19.
