Brandon Overton held off charges from Mike Marlar and Jason Welshan to capture his first ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series in Saturday night’s series season opener at North Georgia Speedway.

Overton’s 0.663 second margin of victory earned him a $4000 pay day at the Chastworth, Georgia short track.

“I hate to say it like this but it was easy,” Overton said. “We just had a really good car and I could do anything with it that I needed to. Weaver told me before the race to just wait on them to slide up and I would be able to drive right by them and he was right. I can’t thank him and Chip Stone enough for this opportunity with this team.”

Marlar jumped to the lead as the green flag waved with Welshan in tow. Overton began working his way through the top four, and by lap ten, had moved past Marlar to take the lead.

Welshan was able to move to second on lap 13, and worked to try to close on the leader. But in the end, it was Overton making the right moves in lap traffic, allowing him to move away to score the win.

Welshan was satisfied with his runner-up finish.

“We had a great race car,” Welshan said. “And, you know, we are a small team so to be able to race with these guys with a little more budget than us – that is pretty satisfying. I mean I am happy I can race with these guys and be competitive. Lap traffic gave us a shot at him there. If that top had been cleaned off just a little more maybe we could have tried to roll him on the outside but it just didn’t happen.”

Marlar held on to finish third after battling an ill handling car most of the race.

“I just couldn’t steer very well at all,” he said. “I was having to run the top just to keep my momentum up to try and keep the lead. I knew when I saw Brandon down below me I was in trouble. But we held on for third and have something to build on.”

Jason Hiett finished in fourth, followed by Ray Cook in fifth.

Michael Page, Riley Hickman, Derek Ellis, Tyler Millwood and Jonathan Davenport rounded out the top ten.

Up next for the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series schedule is a trip to County Line Raceway in Elm City, North Carolina on Saturday, March 18.
