Racers and race fans are prepping for one of the most anticipated short track races of the season, as Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida is set to play host to the 49th annual Snowball Derby on Sunday, Dec. 4.
The entry list for this year’s Derby boasts some 70 drivers who will be fighting for a chance to win the coveted Tom Dawson Trophy.
The Tarheel State of North Carolina claims the most drivers with 16 drivers making the drive down I-85 to the Florida Panhandle, headlined by 2014 winner John Hunter Nemechek.
The host state of Florida has nine drivers entered in this year’s Snowball Derby. David Rogers, Jeff Choquette, Dalton Sargeant and Logan Boyett are a few of the notable Floridians entered in the 49th Annual Snowball Derby. None of the nine Florida drivers entered have won the Snowball Derby.
Eight Georgia drivers are set to represent the Peach State in the Snowball Derby, led by All American 400 winner Bubba Pollard of Senoia, Georgia and Five Flags Super Late Model Champion Casey Roderick of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Dawsonville, Georgia’s Spencer Davis, who spent most of his season on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Tour, also will be looking to make the field, along with Chandler Smith, Korbin Forister, Scotty Ellis, Kason Plott and Kyle Plott.
The Snowball Derby entry list has drivers from 19 different states and two different Canadian provinces, including 2016 CARS Super Late Model Tour champion Raphael Lessard from St. Joseph, Quebec. Jerry Artuso calls Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario home.
Just three drivers entered in the 2016 Snowball Derby field can say they’ve won the Tom Dawson Trophy. Augie Grill has gone to victory lane twice. He scored back-to-back Snowball Derby wins in 2007 and 2008. Nemechek took the win in 2014, and Clay Rogers won the Snowball Derby in 2006.
The entry list for the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model feature is just as long with 64 names entered. More than 10 drivers are going to pull double-duty in the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 this year.
All of the Five Flags Speedway local divisions have strong entry lists as well with more than 20 drivers entered for each division. The Florida Modifieds currently have the best numbers with 30 drivers entered.
The race weekend kicks off on Wednesday with the qualifying order draw.
Thursday will see the Super Late Models take to the track for the first official Snowball Derby practice. The night will be highlighted by a 30-lap race for the Bombers and a 50-lap event for the Sportsmen division.
The top Snowball Derby starting spots will be set on Friday during pole night. The Super Stocks and the Modifieds will each run 50-lap features.
The Pro Late Models take center stage on Saturday for Snowflake 100. The 50-lap Last Chance Qualifier for the Snowball Derby and a 50-lap feature for the Pro Truck division will also run on Saturday night.
Then on Sunday the green flag will fly over the 49th Annual Snowball Derby.
