Trey Starks made it a clean sweep of the weekend’s USCS Sprint Car Series action Saturday night, as he raced from the final starting spot on the field to score the win at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina.

The victory came one night after taking the win in the series event at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, North Carolina, and marked his fifth career USCS win.

Starks was the apparent winner of the first heat race earlier in the evening, but he failed to report to the scales for the post-race weigh in, and he was disqualified. That put him on the tail of the starting line-up for the 30-lap main event.

The Puyallup, Washington driver came from the 20th and last starting spot to take the lead on lap 18 of the 30 lap race. He then charged the final 12 laps to the victory.

“This team is awesome because they never gave up,” Starks said. “I just tried to keep moving forward, keep my head down and pass as many cars as I could. I really love coming down here to race with these guys. I really love the tracks down here because we just have little quarter-mile bull rings in Washington state.”

Danny Smith finished in second, with Terry Gray in third, Morgan Turpen in fourth and Troy Betts in fifth.

Terry Witherspoon, Tony Agin, Mitch Brown, Brandon McLain and Jake McLain rounding out the top ten.

Lance Moss took the lead at the start of the feature. Starks made a bold statement in the opening lap, as he moved from 20th to 10th. By lap four, he had moved up to seventh. Two laps later, Starks had powered his way to fifth, and as the race passed the one-third mark, he moved to fourth. After two more laps, Starks was running solidly in the top three.

The field was slowed by a caution on lap 13 when Tim Perry stalled on the race track. Eric Riggins, Jr. was running in second, but gave up the spot on lap 14 when he slowed on the race track with mechanical issues.

The restart had Moss leading Starks, with Smith, Gray and Turpen, in tow. Starks found his hardest car to pass of the night in the leader Moss. The caution flag came out on lap 18 when Greg Smyre stalled on the front straightaway.

During the caution period, Moss suddenly turned down pit road and retired his race car for the evening. That put Starks in the lead, and he went unchallenged for the remaining 12 laps to take the victory.

In preliminary action, Moss won the six-lap USCS Hoosier Tire Speed Dash and the six-lap Mystery Dash was won by Jeff Willingham, while Agin and Riggins, Jr. took wins in the heat races.

In USCS 600 Mini Sprints action, Dirk Miller led all 20 laps en route to the victory. Jim Young finished second, with David Hall in third. Atlanta, Georgia’s Matt McCullough finished in fourth, with Jordan Howell in fifth.

Matt Carr was sixth, with Remeno Loyal of Snellville, Georgia in seventh. Conner Morrell, Tim Nye and John Kahl rounded out the top ten.

The USCS Sprint Car Series returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama.
