Kingsport Speedway closed the 2016 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing season out in grand style Friday with Championship Night at the Races at the Kingsport, Tennessee raceway.
Drivers winning track championships at “The Concrete Jungle’ in each division included Ronnie McCarty in Late Model Stock Cars, Chris Tunnell in Street Stock, Billy Byington in Pure 4, Kevin Canter in Mod 4 and Marty Tunnell in Pure Street.
Kres VanDyke unofficially will earn the Tennessee State NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Championship. The updated state results will be released next week by NASCAR.
With twin Late Model Stock Car features headlining the night’s racing program, the large crowd assembled saw Chad Finchum capture the win in the first race, while McCarty visited victory lane in the second event.
A total of 22 points separated McCarty, Zeke Shell, Wayne Hale and VanDyke to see who would win the championship. Only two points separated McCarty and Shell entering Championship Night.
Matt Bowling set fast-time in pole qualifying at 15.051 seconds, with Finchum second quickest at 15.124.
Bowling would be unable to start from the first row due to issues with the rear axle on his ride, thus moving Shell up alongside Finchum to begin the race. The first attempt to get the race started saw the caution flag quickly come out due to a three-car wreck in the first turn involving Joey Trent, Nik Williams and Robbie Henry, with both Trent and Henry seeing their races end quickly with damage to their cars.
The next try to get the race under green proved to be successful, with Finchum jumping out to the lead, while championship contenders VanDyke, Shell and McCarty ran nose-to-tail behind the leader. Following the initial incident to start the race, the race ran clean-and-green.
Finchum captured his second win of the season, with VanDyke finishing in second, Shell in third, McCarty in fourth and Robbie Ferguson in fifth.
Hale, Justin Fontaine, Kyle Barnes, Jerry Broyles and Williams rounded out the top ten.
Finchum rolled a six to determine the invert for the second race, putting Hale and Ferguson on the front row. Hale rocketed out to the lead over McCarty and VanDyke, while Ferguson had a bad start, as both he and Shell dropped in line behind VanDyke.
Caution waved on the second lap when Fontaine spun in the second corner, and with the field tightly bunched together Bowling, Broyles and Williams were also collected. Following the red flag to allow track safety crews to clean up debris and fluid, only Fontaine was able to continue.
Hale and McCarty brought the field back up to speed off the double-file restart, and over the next six laps they raced side-by-side battling for the lead. McCarty finally wrestled the position away and once out front he never looked back en route to capturing his fifth Late Model Stock Car win over Hale, VanDyke, Shell and Finchum.
Ferguson, Trent, Austin Peters, Barnes and Fontaine rounded out the top ten.
McCarty backed up his 2015 track championship by winning five races this season and recording 16 top-five finishes in 18 starts.
In other action, Chris Tunnell recorded his fourth Street Stock victory over Paul Shull in second, Royce Peters in third, Mark Christian in fourth and Nick Cole in fifth.
En route to the divisional championship, Tunnell had four feature wins and 13 top-five finishes in 15 starts, with two sixth-place efforts.
Billy Byington looked like he was headed to victory lane, but a late race caution set up a green-white-checkered finish in the Pure 4 feature. His teammate, Kenny Absher, grabbed the lead over Byington off the restart and stayed out front to record his third win. Byington finished in second, with Chris Neeley in third, John Ketron in fourth and William Hale in fifth.
Byington captured the Pure 4 track championship by winning seven features and recording 16 top-five finishes in 16 starts.
Rocky Yates didn’t start racing until the first weekend in June. But nevertheless he dominated action this season as he captured his eighth Mod 4 feature win in nine starts. Dennis Arnold came home in second, with Darrell Whitehead third, Chris Amburgey fourth and Kevin Canter in fifth.
With four feature wins, Canter captured the division title, while his step-father, Yates, led the division with most wins.
Jamie Meadows of recorded his fourth Pure Street feature win in holding off a hard-charging Marty Tunnell for the victory. Duke Bare finished third, followed by Dennis Arnold in fourth and Travis Stoots in fifth.
Tunnell captured the Pure Street track championship by capturing four feature wins, but more impressive was in 15 starts he had 15 top-three finishes.
