Casey Roderick took the lead for the final time on lap 44 of Saturday night’s Pro Late Model feature at Alabama’s Montgomery Motor Speedway, and went on to score the victory.
The Lawrenceville, Georgia racer had to hold off strong challenges from homestate hero Augie Grill and Tennessee’s Willie Allen to record the win.
Bill Bethea III took the early lead, but had to give it up when Roderick made the pass on lap four. Roderick would hold the top spot until lap 24, when Grill was able to take over the point.
While Grill tried to move away, Roderick and Allen had other ideas. Twenty laps later, the pressure from Roderick paid off as he retook the lead. While Roderick worked to build his lead, Grill came under fire from Allen for the second position.
The race saw a flurry of cautions, including a red flag condition after oil was leaked on the track from the car of Ty Roberts.
The most frightening moment of the night came on lap 39, when the car of Justin Ashburn trailed flames coming down the frontstretch.
As the laps wound down, Roderick, driving for Georgia Racing Hall of Famer Ronnie Sanders, continued to hold the lead, while Allen looked to take second from Grill. When the checkered flag flew, it was Roderick scoring the win, while Allen was able to wrestle second away from Grill. Brett Holmes finished in fourth, with Luke Christrian in fifth.
Austin Wood, Kyle McCallum, Stacey Crain, Taylor Stricklin and Brian Weimer rounded out the top ten.
In other action, McDonough, Georgia’s Curt Britt took the lead on lap 19 of the Pro Truck feature, and went on to take the victory. Daniel Bradford finished in second, with Howard Langham in third, Kevin Barrett in fourth and Rodney Benefield in fifth.
