The first of back-to-back nights of Week 6 action in the Thursday Thunder Legends Racing Series presented by Papa John’s Pizza got underway on the quarter-mile Thunder Ring at Atlanta Motor Speedway Wednesday night.
Bandits
After stripping the lead from Joshua Kossek on the eighth lap of the Bandits Division feature, Clay Thompson pulled away from the field to win his seventh consecutive race. Thompson can match a Thursday Thunder record for most consecutive wins in a season with eight with a trip to victory lane in the second night of the Week 6 doubleheader Thursday evening.
After grabbing the lead from pole-winner Michael Gannon on the first lap, Kossek hung on to pace the field for the first seven laps and looked like the newcomer might put Thompson’s streak in jeopardy. But Thompson’s speed wouldn’t be suppressed, and he polished off the win to approach record-tying territory.
Kossek held on to finish second, while Nathan Jackson rounded out the podium.
Live Oak Plantation Outlaws
D.J. Canipe returned to the win column Wednesday in the Live Oak Plantation Outlaws Division after seeing his five-race win streak dating back to Week 1 come to an end last week. After winning the pole and starting up front, Canipe’s sixth win in seven races was never in doubt, as he led every lap of the feature.
Ricky Springer crossed the line in second, his best finish of the season, while Gage Roberts also topped his previous season-best of fourth-place with a third-place performance. Blaise Maddox finished in fourth, with Annabelle Mohwish in fifth.
Racing Radios Pro
In the Racing Radios Pro Division feature, Mason Massey made his second visit to victory lane this season, leading every lap of the 20-lap feature to notch his second win of the year and his first since the season’s opening race.
It was the second straight race with repeat victors, after the first five races of the season produced five different winners. Taylor Jorgensen posted her best finish of the year with a second place finish, while Week 3 winner William Martin rounded out the podium in third.
Plemons Investments Masters
Scott Moseley won his fifth straight race and sixth out of seven on the season in the Plemons Investments Masters Division. Moseley started on the outside of the front row, next to Week 2 winner Bill Plemons, Jr. and made the pass for the lead exiting turn 4 on the first lap. From there, it was all Moseley, as he led each of the 15-laps for the victory.
Robbie Woodall matched his best finish of the season with a second place performance, while Plemons, the only other driver to visit victory lane this season, finished third.
Plemons Investments Young Lions
In the Plemons Investments Young Lions Division feature, Brody Pope was poised to win his fourth straight race and fifth on the season, as he built a big lead in the early going. But rounding turn 3 on the seventh lap, Pope got loose and spun, bringing out the caution flag and sending him to the rear of the field.
Sam Mayer took over the top spot on the restart and led five consecutive laps, but Connor Younginer would overtake Franklin following a late race restart to lead the final three laps and secure his second victory of the year.
Mayer held on for the runner-up finish, and Lawson Ingold rounded out the podium in third.
Atlanta Heart Associates Semi-Pro
Jensen Jorgensen led all but the first lap of the Atlanta Heart Associates Semi-Pro Division feature for his third straight victory and fourth of the year.
Two-time winner Nolan Pope finished second behind Jorgensen, while Brandon Brock, Scott Joy and Hudson Halder rounded out the top five.
Chargers
D.J. Canipe added to his win total on the season, taking the victory in the Chargers Division feature and finishing ahead of challenger Audrie Ruark.
