Moseley Masters Legends Field In AMS Thursday Thunder

The second half of 2016 season of the Thursday Thunder Legends Racing Series Presented by Papa John’s Pizza kicked off with Week 5 racing on the quarter-mile Thunder Ring at Atlanta Motor Speedway Thursday night.

A fast-paced evening of racing saw one season-long win streak come to an end and another one extended for a sixth straight race, while the first two-time winner in the Racing Radios Pro Division made his way to victory lane after five different winners in the previous five races.

Plemons Investments Masters

Leading off the eight-race feature lineup was the Plemons Investments Masters Division. Entering the feature, Scott Moseley had established a firm grip on the standings lead after winning the previous three races and four out of five on the season. By the end of the 20-lap feature, he’d find himself in victory lane once again.

Tina Johnson led the field to the green flag and made a strong start, staying ahead of Moseley and Mark Swan, who were running second and third behind her, throughout each of the first 10 laps.

But Moseley was patient, waiting for any possible opening or mistake from Johnson. And when he saw one, he pounced.

Rounding turn 3 on the 11th lap, Johnson got loose heading into the fourth turn, and that was all Moseley needed.

“You just bide your time,” he said in his post-race interview. “I hate it for Tina, but I got lucky. We went down there in (turns) 3 and 4, and I don’t know if she got in the dirt or drove it in too hard, but she got a little loose and opened the door, and that’s all I was waiting for.”

Moseley went on to lead each of the last 10 laps, while Johnson matched his pace to finish second for the third straight week. The win was Moseley’s fourth in a row, dating back to the first race in Week 3’s doubleheader.

“It’s hard to believe,” he said. “I hope this streak keeps going. I’ve never had four in a row. And we ain’t stopping. We’re going to hammer down from here until the end.”

Behind Johnson, Bill Plemons, Jr. notched his fifth top-5 finish with a third-place performance, with Swan in fourth and Robbie Woodall in fifth.

Wallace Electric Rookie Bandolero

Savannah Bart put together a solid race in the Wallace Electric Rookie Bandolero Division feature for her first win of the season. After starting on the pole, Bart would relinquish her lead to Ashton Whitener on the sixth lap, but after a 13th-lap restart, Bart made a move to the inside of Whitener coming out of turn 2 to regain the top spot.

Bart held off the field down the stretch and crossed the line in first-place for her first win of 2016. Whitener finished in second, with Wil Griffis in third, Keaton Hendrix in fourth and Mikie Mohwish in fifth.

Plemons Investments Young Lions

Brody Pope drew to within two points of division leader Connor Younginer in the Plemons Investments Young Lions Division points standings with his fourth win on the season and third in a row.

After starting on the outside of the second row, Pope managed to avoid several accidents before picking off Younginer on the eighth lap and never looked back.

Younginer finished second, his fifth top-5 in six races, and holds on to the narrow standings lead heading into next week’s two-night doubleheader, while Cody Hall, Rafe Slate and Lawson Ingold rounded out the top five.

Bandits

In the Bandits Division feature, Clay Thompson led flag-to-flag and put together his sixth consecutive victory to start the 2016 season. Michael Gannon matched his best finish of the year in the runner-up position, while Nathan Jackson finished third for his sixth consecutive top-3 finish. Wilder Etheredge came home in fourth, with Grant Thompson in fifth.

Racing Radios Pro

After starting the season with five different winners in five races, William Plemons III of Acworth made his second trip to victory lane in the Racing Radios Pro Division feature.

Plemons started in fifth place and ran near the front of the pack as Matthew Barnard fought off the field from the lead through the first nine laps. But Barnard nor any of the other drivers had the speed to match Plemons, and he made quick work of the cars in front of him to grab the lead on the 10th lap.

“I knew I had a little bit of a better car, but I was trying to see if Mason (Massey) or Dylan (Murry) could get by the 22 (of Barnard),” said Plemons. “I know he was kind of holding his own, but I hope we put on a good show.

“I knew when I got to him, I could get on by him. I just had to give him a little nudge down there and got on by him.”

Plemons led the rest of the way for the win. Mason Massey finished second, followed by Barnard in third, Dylan Murry in fourth and Joshua Hicks in fifth.

Atlanta Heart Associates Semi-Pro

Jensen Jorgensen won for the third time in the last four races in the Atlanta Heart Associates Semi-Pro Division feature to widen his lead in the points standings. Nolan Pope finished second, with Jason Treschl third, Brandon Brock fourth and Hudson Halder fifth.

Live Oak Plantation Outlaws

After five straight wins to open the season in the Live Oak Plantation Outlaws Division, D.J. Canipe would be denied a sixth.

Canipe started the race in sixth, and despite running near the front the entire feature, wasn’t able to find any openings as Blaise Maddox broke through for his first victory of the season.

Maddox ran mid-pack for much of the feature, but a series of cautions and subsequent restarts catapulted him to the front as the remaining laps dwindled to two. On a green-white-checkered restart, Maddox broke through a three-wide melee and passed Connor Younginer, beating him to the line and sending him to victory lane.

Canipe finished third, with Ricky Springer in fourth and Trey Tadrzak in fifth.

Chargers

Andrew Dollar held off Audrie Ruark and Annabelle Mohwish in the last five laps to polish off a win in the first Chargers Division feature of the season.

The Thursday Thunder Legends Racing Series continues with Week 6 of the eight-week summer series next Wednesday and Thursday, July 6 and 7 in the second back-to-back doubleheader of the season.
