Chase Purdy continued his domination of Late Model Stock action at Greenville Pickens Speedway, as he swept the twin NASCAR Whelen All American Series features Saturday night at the Easley, SC raceway.
Tommy Lemons, Jr. and Landon Huffman led the field to the green flag from the front row of the first 75 lap Late Model Stock Car feature, with Huffman quickly edging out in front to lead the opening stages. Meanwhile, Lemons, Jr. fell back to fourth behind Cody Haskins and Purdy.
Purdy would dispatch Haskins for second by the seventh lap, and paced himself behind leader Huffman as the top three ran single-file. Behind that battle, Trey Gibson moved to fourth by lap 13.
Just past the halfway point, Purdy began working over the leader, and on lap 49, took the lead for the first time. The caution came out five laps later when Gibson slowed on the frontstretch, drawing the yellow flag.
Back under green, Lemons, Jr. would pass Huffman for second, and worked to try to close in on Purdy. But Purdy was not to be denied, as he held on to the lead and went on to take the victory.
Lemons Jr. held on for second, with David Roberts in third, Huffman in fourth and Ryan Walker in fifth.
Roberts led the field to green for the second Late Model Stock feature from the pole, but he would only be out front for the first three laps before Purdy moved to the point in turn one.
The field went largely single-file through the first half of the race, and the halfway point, Purdy led Lemons, Gibson – who made a quick rebound from his race one issues – Roberts and Dylan Hall, with the top five spread out over an eight-second margin.
The only change for position in the second half would come from Hall, who passed Roberts for fourth on lap 57, but up front it was all Purdy as he completed the clean sweep for his fifth victory of the season.
Lemons finished second, with Gibson, Hall and Roberts rounding out the top five.
“We made a few changes between the first and second twins to help the balance a little bit, but we knew all along that the car would be at its best under the lights,” said Purdy. “There’s a lot of confidence now after this performance tonight, though. I never pictured my career in this car kicking off quite like this.
“These guys on the Hawk McCall Motorsports team give me great equipment each time out and I’ve just been doing what they tell me. It’s paying off so far, so we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and see if we can’t rack up a few more of these in the next few months.”
In other action, Blair Addis and Anthony Miller were the stars of the Southeast Limited Late Model portion of the night. Addis led 73 of 100 laps in the premier Pro Division, while Miller dominated the 50-lap Daytona1 Challenger division en route to their respective trips to the winner’s circle.
For both drivers, it was their first career series victory.
“I worked with Darren Latham one time before in a UARA-STARS race out here, and I ran second that day in a 150-lap race with his coaching,” Addis said. “He called me Friday night and said, ‘Hey, let me spot for you and I think we can get you a win out there.’ So I owe most of this to him. He was patient … he coached me to save, save, save … and I was just the monkey behind the wheel driving my heart out. This car was unreal tonight.”
“This hot rod was awesome tonight,” Daytona1 Challenger winner Miller said of his win. “The whole race I could stay hooked up on the bottom, for the most part. At the end it started getting a little tight in and loose off the corners, but my spotter helped me stay focused and we pulled it off.”
Buck Simmons rolled to his fifth win of the season in the Pure Stock class, extending his track points lead in the process. Ashley Granata finished in second, with Chris Meinders in third, Spencer Morgan in fourth and A.J. Davis in fifth.
Greenville-Pickens Speedway returns to action on Saturday, May 21, featuring racing from the Limited Late Model, Renegade, Pure Stock, Super Stock and Four Cylinder divisions.
