Colby Howard ended his night in victory lane for the third time in three weeks at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, South Carolina Saturday night.
The 14-year-old Simpsonville, South Carolina driver outran a determined R.J. West to win the 50 lap Limited Late Model feature.
West nosed Howard out in qualifying to start on the pole for the feature, and he also got the early lead as Howard settled in to second after a lap or so, while Luke Sorrow, Taylor Sorrow and Phillip Peters held the top five spots.
Howard held tight behind West, and began looking for a way by him just past lap ten. He finally found some room on lap 14 and dove underneath to lead the 14th circuit.
West stayed within striking distance as both cars appeared evenly matched. The race was slowed on lap 28 by a yellow flag when fifth place Peters broke loose trying to squeeze underneath Taylor Sorrow. Peters clipped the inside wall and suffered some damage, but was able to restart at the tail of the field.
On the restart, West battled Howard hard from the outside and refused to give up, finally reclaimed the lead on lap 30. He held the lead for four laps until Don Morgan spun in turn three, bringing out another yellow flag.
When the green flag waved again West and Howard waged battle for the lead. The duo made contact on lap 35 as they raced through turn one, sending West around and bringing out another caution.
On the restart, Howard held the lead, but now had to hold off Luke Sorrow. Howard was able to hold off the challenge, and went on to score the victory. Meanwhile, West busted through traffic and was able to move to second by the end of the race. Luke Sorrow finished third, with Taylor Sorrow in fourth and Phillip Peters in fifth.
In other action, Chad Redding got his second win of the season in the Four-Cylinder feature, leading start to finish en route to the victory. Dannon Esco finished in second, with Michael Webster third, Tommy Davis fourth and Michael Cross fifth.
Buck Simmons went flag to flag in the Pure Stock feature to bag his fourth victory of the year. Chris Meinders finished second, with Charlie Meinders in third, Spencer Morgan in fourth and Darrell Meinders in fifth.
Steve Guthrie was the winner in the Renegade feature, with Bobby Emory, Alexx Breazele, Billy Brown and Terry Thurston rounding out the top five.
Tim Sams won the Super Stock feature, with Josh Sams in second, Robin Darnell in third, Travis Cox in fourth and Dale Stancil in fifth.
Greenville-Pickens Speedway is back in action on Saturday, May 14, with the Southeast Limited Late Models joining the bill with the Late Model Stocks, along with Pure Stocks and Renegades.
