Luke Sorrow made a clean sweep of the Southeast Limited Late Model Series on Friday night by winning both features in the series’ first visit to Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC.
The Pro Division ran 100 laps and the Daytona1 Challengers ran a 50-lap feature event.
Sorrow was the fast qualifier in the Daytona1 Challenger feature, and took off with the lead at the drop of the green with Colby Howard settling into second. They ran that way for the first 24 laps of the race until Blake Humphrey spun in turn two, bringing out the caution.
Sorrow made sure he was ready for the restart and pulled Howard by a full car length into turn one. Andrew Cordell made a move to the inside of Howard and raced him for a full lap before Howard reclaimed the spot.
Further back in the field, Thad Moffitt, the grandson of NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty, ran third in the No. 46 until the lap 24 restart when he lost a couple of spots and fell back to fifth. He eventually finished the race in sixth.
Meanwhile, Howard did all he could to get around the leader, but couldn’t make the move as the 14-year-old Sorrow took home the victory, leading all 50 laps in the process.
Howard finished a strong second, with Cordell in third, Amber Lynn in fourth and Blake Humphrey in fifth.
Howard scored the pole for the 100-lap Pro Division feature, with starting alongside him. Veteran racer Justin Carroll and New Englander Anthony Alfredo made up row two.
When the green flag dropped it was Howard jumping off the inside to take the lead, but Carroll was not going to let him get too far away. The first caution of the race came out on lap two when Moffitt and Gibson got together in turn four.
Moffitt went directly to the pits and was out of the event. Gibson initially restarted but parked his racer on lap 11.
On the ensuing restart, Howard spun his tires, allowing Carroll to race off the outside groove and into the lead. Once out front, Carroll pulled the rest of the field. Howard was able to remain in second, but behind him action started to become more intense as the race moved past lap 30.
Alfredo, a past winner in the series, ran a strong third with Sorrow and Dylan Hall in tow. However, as lap 34 went up on the board, Alfredo was beginning to slow his pace and Sorrow, playing a patience game for the first quarter of the event, took the spot and set sail after the leaders. Sorrow then reeled in second place Carroll and soon took that position.
Sorrow got a break on lap 71, when Andrew Cordell slowed to a stop on the backstretch, bringing out the caution. That bunched the field up for the restart.
When the green flag flew again, Howard got a strong restart, moving back into control of the race. As the laps wound down, Sorrow began working on the leader, looking for daylight around him.
With five laps to go, Sorrow drove his car deep into turn three, drew alongside Howard and made the pass. He would drive away to score the win with by a 1.157 second margin, giving him a clean sweep of the two features. Sorrow pocketed a total of $4,000 for his efforts.
Howard finished in the runner-up spot for the second time on the night. Carroll finished third, with Alfredo in fourth and Cordell in fifth.
